Ex(1): Estimate the percentage
reduction in speed of a separately
excited generator working with
constant excitation on 400 V
constant voltage bus-bars to
decrease its load from 600 to 400
kW. The machine resistance is 0.02
Ω. Neglect armature reaction.
3 https://uod-ece.blogspot.com
Solution:
𝑃1 600∗103
𝐼𝐿1 = = = 1500 A.
𝑉 400
𝐸1 = V + 𝐼𝐿1 * 𝑅𝑚 = (400+(1500*0.02))=430 V.
𝑃2 400∗103
𝐼𝐿2 = = = 1000 A.
𝑉 400
𝐸2 = V + 𝐼𝐿2 * 𝑅𝑚 = (400+(1000*0.02))=420 V.
When 𝜑1 =𝜑2
𝑁1 𝐸1
=
𝑁2 𝐸2
∴ Percentage reduction in speed
𝑁1−𝑁2 𝐸1−𝐸2 430−420
*100 = *100 = *100 = 2.33%
𝑁1 𝐸1 430

Ex(2): A d.c. shunt generator has an
open circuit voltage of 250 V. When
the machine is loaded, the terminal
voltage is found to decrease to 240 V.
Find the load current if the field
circuit resistance is 40 Ω and the
armature circuit resistance is 0.02 Ω.
Neglect armature reaction.
(Ans. 494 A)
5 https://uod-ece.blogspot.com
Ex(3): A 4-pole lap connected dc shunt generator
having field and armature resistances of 50 Ω and 0.15
Ω respectively supplies seventy-five 200 V, 60 W
lamps. Calculate the armature current, the current
through the armature conductors and the induced
emf. Allow brush contact drop as 2 V.
Solution:
𝑃𝑂 = 75 * 60 = 4500 W
𝑃𝑂 4500
𝐼𝐿 = = = 22.5 A.
𝑉 200
𝑉 200
𝐼𝑓 = = =4A
𝑅𝑓 50
∴ 𝐼𝑎 = 𝐼𝐿 + 𝐼𝑓 = 22.5 + 4 = 26.5 A.
6 https://uod-ece.blogspot.com
𝐼𝑎 26.5
I= = = 6.625 A.
𝐴 4
E = V + 𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎 + 𝑉𝑏
= (200+(26.5*0.15)+2)
= 205.975 V

Ex(4): In a 220 V, d.c. compound
generator, the resistance of the armature,
series and shunt windings are 0.12 Ω, 0.08
Ω and 55 Ω respectively. The machine
supplies power to 200 lamps each rated at
60w, 220 V. Find the total emf and the
armature current when the generator is
connected as i) short-shunt ii)long-shunt.
Allow brush contact drop of 2 V.
(Ans. 233.399 V, 233.709 V)

Ex(5): A 4-pole lap-connected armature of a d.c. shunt
generator is required to supply the loads connected in
parallel:
1) 5 kw geyser at 250 V and,
2) 2.5 kw lighting load also at 250 V.
The generator has an armature resistance of 0.2 Ω and
a field resistance of 250 Ω. The armature has 120
conductors in the slots and runs at 1000 rpm. Allowing
1 V per brush for contact drops and neglecting friction
find:-
1) Flux per pole
2) Armature current per parallel path
9 https://uod-ece.blogspot.com
Solution:
5000
Geyser current = = 20 A.
250
2500
Current for lighting = = 10 A.
250
Total current = 30 A.
Field current for generator = 1 A.
Hence, armature current = 31 A.
Armature resistance drop = 31*0.2 = 6.2 volts
Generated emf = 250+6.2+2 = 258.2 V
Since E = 𝑉𝑡 + 𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎 + total brush contact drop.
10 https://uod-ece.blogspot.com
For a 4-pole lap-connected armature;
Number of parallel paths = number of poles = 4
1) The flux per pole is obtained from the emf
𝜑𝑍𝑁𝑃
equation 𝐸𝑔 =
60𝐴
𝜑∗120∗1000∗4
258.2=
60∗4
∴ 𝜑 = 129.1 𝑚𝑊𝑏
31
2) Armature current per parallel path =
4
=7.75 A.

Ex(6): A separately excited
generator, when running at 1000
rpm supplied 200 A at 125 V. what
will be the load current when the
speed drops to 800 rpm. If the
load current is unchanged? Given
that the armature resistance =
0.04 Ω and brush drop 2 V.
(Ans. 159.4 A)
