3. THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE: a / an

Use an before vowel sounds a, e, i, o and u and silent h. Use a before all consonant sounds.

PITFALLS BEWARE

1. “ I ” is always written with a capital letter.


She is a veterinarian and I am a psychiatrist.

2. “You” is both singular and plural, formal and informal.

3. “ It ” has no equivalent in Spanish. It is used for animals, things and impersonal


expressions, like describing the climate.

4. The verb to be is almost always used in the contracted form.


I am an architect. I’m an architect.
He is a dentist. He’s a dentist.
She is a veterinarian. She’s a veterinarian.
It is an animal. It’s an animal.
We are writers. We’re writers.
They are doctors. They’re doctors.

5. Always use the indefinite article a / an


before the profession of a person.
He’s a comedian.
She is an actress.

Or before an adjective in a description


William is a happy person.

Samantha is an excellent doctor.
