II. Description of Barangay/Location:
Purok 1, Barangay Poblacion, Torrijos, Marinduque is located at the
west of the whole barangay. Starting from the new municipal building to
the Police Station. It also covers the whole Catholic Cemetery.
Most of the houses are built out of woods which has a high risk of
damage when calamities hit. These houses are located near the shore.
One of the most dangerous places during calamities especially during
storm surges. Moreover, high trees in these area are also common. There
are a large unhabited lot covered with trees serving as the boundary of
purok 1 and 2.

III. Possible Hydro-Meteorological Hazards:

The Purok 2 of barangay Poblacion is one of the most dangerous area

whenever a calamity strikes. Aligned with the disaster preparedness that
all individual and citizens of the area must know, here are the three (3)
possible hydro-meteorological hazards that the said purok may possibly
face:
1. Typhoon
A typhoon are storm systems characterized by rapidly spiraling
storms, low-pressure center, and intensely strong winds and
heavy rains.
2. Tornadoes
Tornadoes, also called as ipo-ipo is a rapidly swirling
condensation funnel whose narrow end comes in contact with
the ground.
3. Storm Surges
Storm surges generate huge waves capable of destroying sea
walls and structures facing the sea. This can be triggered when a
typhoon made its landfall.
IV. Possible Effects of Hazards:

During a typhoon or any other calamity that strike a certain place,

immediate action and safety precautions must be applied. People lying on
those hazardous areas, specially near the shore, are advice to evacuate as
soon as possible. Before this, knowledge about the effects of the calamity on
the people and environment is highly crucial. As a resident of Purok 2 where
calamities’ impacts are grave, one must learn the consequences of these
dangerous disasters.
1. The possible effects of a typhoon:
- When a typhoon strikes the province, the alert on the local
officials down to purok kagawad’s are always high. That is
because of the danger the typhoon may bring towards the
area. Last December 2019, when typhoon Tisoy traced its
path across the country, the impact of it was clearly seen in
the entire Purok 2. The branches of the trees mostly mango
trees clung on the roofs of the houses and electrical post and
wires. Coconut trees were swayed by the violent winds and
most of it were uprooted causing them to fall in houses. The
most impactful and serious effect of the typhoon in the said
purok is the devastation and breakage of the cellular satellite
namely both Globe and Smart. This resulted on having a very
poor and almost no signal in the connected areas. The
typhoon also made the houses along the shore beside the
park, collapsed. The people fled the area as well to seek
immediate evacuation due to the strong and huge waves the
sea is giving off.

2. Tornadoes
- The effects of tornadoes in Purok 2 are also serious as the
area is situated near the shore. Tornadoes start at the sea
then move almost quickly unto the land. As a result, houses
near the seashore will be blown off. Tornadoes are also
dangerous for fishermen who are still at the sea when it is
currently happening. Aside from these outcomes, people may
also panic and develop a trauma towards the disaster.

3. Storm Surges
- Storm surges may cause the land area near the shore to
collapsed. The houses, plants and trees, and other structures
near are also prone to the impact of the big waves. Storm
surges may heighten specially when its time for a hightide to
occur. When it happens unknowingly to the residents of the
purok, dangers may rise as these surges may cause their
houses and properties to corrode. Livelihoods are also
affected as well such as fishing. The height of the waters
when there is a storm surge reaches 5-10 steps of the stairs in
Freedom Park. There was also a time when the waves are so
strong that it reaches the topmost benches of the park.

Despite of all of these, the people living on Purok 2, must prepare

themselves at all times regardless of the fine weather. Typhoons and other
hazards that associate it happens almost every month so readying oneself
will decrease the chance of being in danger.

suffers the most when a typhoon strikes.
