Mass vs.

Weight &
Volume

1
Mass vs. Weight
Mass Weight
• a measure of how much • the force of gravity on
matter an object is made an object
of
• equal to the mass of
• does not change, the body times the
regardless of where local acceleration of
something or someone is
gravity
Why do
you think
the
person’s
weight is Mass = 59 kg
Mass = 59 kg less on
the Weight = 96 N
Weight = 579 N moon?

DENSITY

3
Density
• a measure of the amount of matter present in a
given volume of a substance
• typically expressed in the following units:
• grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3) for
solids
• grams per milliliter (g/ml) for liquids
• does not depend on how much of a substance
you have (intrinsic property) – in other words,
the density of a gold bar would be the same as
the density of a gold flake
• can change as temperature and pressure
change
Which do you think
is more dense? Why?

4
Calculating Density
• Density can be calculated by dividing the
mass of an object by its volume

Sample Problem
Timothy found a solid metal block
D=m that has a mass of 100 grams and
V a volume of 25 cm3. What would be
the density of the block?

D = 100 grams = 4 grams

25 cm3 cm3
5
The Density Triangle
D=m
V=m V
D
m m = D .V

D . V
6
Using the density equation, answer the
following questions.
• If an object has a mass of 75 g and a volume of 10
cm3, what is the density of the object?

• If an object has a volume of 400 cm3 and a density

of 20 g/cm3, what is the mass of the objects?

• If an object has a mass of 1000g and a density of 70

g/mL, what is the volume of the object?
