Density

This document defines density and provides examples of how to calculate it using the formula: Density = Mass / Volume. It discusses measuring the density of liquids, irregular solids, and gases. It also gives an example of calculating population density for a town with 120,000 people living in an area of 15 km2. The population density is 8000 people/km2.

DENSITY – MASS

- VOLUME
Part 2
What is Density?
“Which weighs heavier 1 kg of cotton or 1 kg of iron?”

• Density is essentially a measurement of

how tightly matter is packed together.
• Density = Mass ÷ Volume

Density:
• Density is a measure of the amount of matter
that is present in a certain volume of it.
• Equation to calculate density:
Density=Mass/Volume.
• Basic SI unit = divide mass by volume so
kg/m³ - pronounced kilogram per meter cubed.
• When small amounts are used - density often
measured in grams + volumes in cubic
centimeters giving a density value in gm/cm³.
• To convert g/cm³ to kg/m³, x1000. (3=0’s
move “.” 3x)
• Example: Ice density 0.920g/cm³ → 0.920 x
1000 = 920kg/m³

Density - Measuring the density of a g 175g
liquid:
Is found the following way: 250

•1. Find the mass of the mass of the

measuring cylinder:110g.
•Add the liquid and find the total mass
285g.
•Take away the mass of the empty
measuring cylinder to get the mass of
the liquid: 175g.
•2. Read the volume of the liquid from
the cylinder:250 cm³.
•3. Calculate density: M/V =
175g/250cm³ = 0.7 g/cm³
Measuring density of an irregular solid:
• 1. Find the mass using a balance .
• 2. Find the volume by submerging the
solid in water in a measuring cylinder.
The rise in the water level will give
you the volume of the solid = 30ml.
• 3. Calculate density of solid: M/V
Floating and sinking:
• Wood floats on water because of
different densities. Wood less dense
than water.
• When two substances put together
the less dense one floats above the
denser one. Full fat milk – cream
float on top – less dense.
Density of gases:
• 1. Remove air – vacuum pump. Find mass of
empty flask with a balance(123.1g).
• 2. Fill flask with gas then find total
mass(123.7g). Take away empty flask
123.
mass(12.7-123.1=0.6) – mass of gas. 1
123.7
• 3. Fill flask with water. Pour water into
measuring cylinder to find volume of
flask(520cm³).
• 4. Calculate density of gas: 0.6g/520cm³=
0.001g/cm³
• Gas density changes as its temperature
AND pressure change. Gas density
compared at same temp.(0 degrees) +
pressure (760 mm of mercury in a vertical
tube) called (STP). Less dense gas rise
above denser gas.
