Title: Volcanoes October 2024

Learning objectives:
• To identify the parts of a volcano
• To describe the structure of volcanoes
• To recognise the differences between
composite and shield volcanoes
What is a volcano?
A volcano is an opening or vent in the earth’s
surface where molten magma erupts and solidifies
as lava.

Vent

Volcanoes can be in 3
What is a volcano?
different states:

Active volcano – liable to

erupt- Mount Etna (Italy)

Dormant (sleeping) volcano – a

volcano which has not erupted for
many years- Mount Fuji (Japan)

Extinct volcano – a volcano

which has not erupted for many
thousands or millions of year-
Ben Nevis (Scotland)

Features of a volcano
Your task:
Using what you have
just learnt, have a
look at the
definitions for each
key feature of a
volcano.
Come up with your
own simple
definitions and write
them in the blank
column
Challenge: How do you think
volcanoes are formed over time?
Types of a volcano
These pictures
are both of
volcanoes! They
are formed in
different places

What is different
about them?
Come up with a list of
at least 5
differences.
Types of volcanoes

Composite
volcano

Shield
volcano
Composite cone volcano

Built up of layers
of lava and ash
Very explosive
Found at
destructive plate
boundaries
Viscous, slow
moving lava (like
treacle)

Mount Etna (Italy) h?v=m_e7jUfvt-I
Shield volcano Built only from
layers of lava
Produce lots of
lava, but not very
explosive
Found at
constructive plate
boundaries
Runny, fast
moving lava (like
water)

Types of volcanoes
Your task:
1. Cut out your two volcanoes and stick them into your
book with space around the edge
2. Match up the correct key terms below with the
correct volcano diagram

Composite (cone) violent eruptions runny lava

thick (viscous) lava gentle eruptions
many smaller vents found at destructive boundaries
Shield (smooth) one large vent
made of lava and ash made of just lava
found at constructive boundaries

Spicy questions

5. Why do volcanoes erupt

in the first place?
4. Does the UK have any
volcanoes? Can you name
any?
3. What are the
differences between shield
and composite volcanoes?
2. What plate boundary do
shield volcanoes form on?
1. What are the 3 types of
plate boundary?
