I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the pupils must have:


a. Distinguished fact from opinion;
B. Stated the importance of speaking the truth; and
C. Written a sentence for fact and opinion.

Let us widen our vocabulary through
learning the meaning of the following
words:

Grumbling-complaining about something


in a bad-tempered way
Prowling-moving around without being
noticed
Weeping-shed tears

For our lesson today, we will start with a


short story.

Do you know the story about “The Boy


who cried Wolf”?

Take note of the following questions first


because we will answer them after
reading. Will you read the following guide
questions? (a pupil will read the questions)

1. Why did the villagers get mad?

2. Why is it important to tell the truth?

(The teacher will read the story)

Let’s go back to the questions earlier. Will


you read and answer question#1?
Why did the villagers get mad? The villagers got mad because they found
out that the boy was lying.

Why is it important to tell the truth? It is important to tell the truth so other
people will believe and trust us.

Now what lesson can we get from the Always speak the truth
story?

Another lesson that we can get from the


story is “Lying breaks trust”.When we lie,
we could break someone
‘s trust. So the next time that we say
something, they might not believe or trust
us anymore.

To prevent spreading lies or false


information, we need to do a “fact
checking.”

Fact checking is a process that verifies


whether the information is based on facts
or not.

C. Discussion

Let’s have this sentence from the story.

Later, he saw a real wolf prowling about


his flock.

Based on the story that we have read, is


there really a wolf that is prowling on his
flock? Yes

That’s right, it is true according to the


story. But how did we know that it is true?
Read the line that says so. The sheep already runaway

So it really did happen. When the


statement or information is true, we call it
Fact.
Will you read what is fact? (a pupil will read the sentence)

Fact
A fact is a statement that is known or
proven to be true.

Facts can be proven through:


1. Doing research
2. Reading a book or newspaper.
3. Watching and listening to different
media platforms.
4. Asking the person involved directly.

For example:
Lupang Hinirang is the national anthem of
the Philippines.

To verify whether this information is a fact


or opinion. I will ask some questions then
raise your thumbs up if you agree,
thumbs down if not, okay?

Can we search this information on the Yes/Thumbs up


internet?

Can we see it on the news? Yes/Thumbs up

Is it written in books and newspapers? Yes/Thumbs up

Alright, then this statement is a fact.

How about this sentence from the story

The villagers thought that he was trying to


fool them again.

Do you think this sentence is also a fact? No,teacher.


No, because the word thought, it only
expresses what the villagers think. And
when a statement shows what a person
thinks or feels, it is called OPINION.

Now let’s find out what is an Opinion.

An opinion is what you think or feel.


It cannot be proven.

There are signal words that can help you


recognize a statement or information that
might be an opinion.

Will you read the following words? (a pupil will read the words)
Feel, believe, might, perhaps, think,
probably

For example:
I think pizza is the most delicious food.

Again, an opinion is a statement that


cannot be proven. So even if we search
“what is the most delicious food?” on the
internet, it will give you a lot of different
answers because some may think that
pizza is not the most delicious food. For
them, it can be roasted chicken, steak,
pasta, or curry.

What is the signal word used in the


example? think

The statement “I think pizza is the most


delicious food” contains the signal word
think.

It’s not even on the news nor in books or


newspapers, right?
So, there is no evidence that proves that
pizza is the most delicious food.
We all have our own OPINION about the
most delicious food. It means that is what
we think or feel, it is from our own
perspective.

But if we say Teacher Airel’s favorite food


is pizza, is it a fact or an opinion?

It is a fact, but first what you need to do is


verify if the information is true? You can
ask the person involved (which is me) to
know whether it is true or not.

For example, you asked me “what is my


favorite food?” So, I will answer “pizza”, it
means I already verified that the
statement is true. Therefore the
statement is a fact, because it was
already proven through verifying the
information

D. Generalization
Now that we already discussed what is
Fact and Opinion, how will you distinguish
or differentiate Fact from Opinion?

Always remember that:


 A fact is a statement proven to be
true.
 An opinion is a statement of belief
or judgment about something.

E. Application
BAAMBOOZLE TIME!
Instruction:
The pupils will choose a number, then
read the sentence and tell whether it is a
fact or an opinion.

PEN AND PAPER ACTIVITY

For the next activity, bring out your pen


paper.

Instruction:
Write one sentence each for fact and
opinion.

After writing I will call 3 students to share


their work to the class.

IV. Evaluation

I. Fact or Opinion
Write F if the statement is Fact, O if the
statement is an Opinion.

1. The Philippine flag has three stars.


2. Rizal Park is located in Manila.
3. Today seems hotter than yesterday.
4. That was a good movie.
5. I don’t like eating spicy food.

V. Assignment

Write three facts about yourself and three


opinions about your place.
