MOLTING AND ECDYSIS

The process of shedding an external skeleton for the purpose of growth or change in
shape is called ECDYSIS; it occurs in such invertebrates as arthropods, nematodes, and
tardigrades.

THE ROLE OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

It is controlled by neuroendocrine secretions. Hormone stimulates the production and
release from the glands of ecdysone, a hormone that initiates molting, which is the
periodic shedding of the outer skeleton that typically occurs in nematodes, insects, and
other arthropods.

FOUR MOLTS: J1--M--J2--M--J3--M--J4--M--Adult [controlled by neuroendocrine

secretions].

FOUR MAIN STEPS:

1. The stimulus is received
Discharge neurosecretory material, which initiate
step # 2
2. The old cuticle separate from the hypodermis.
3. The new cuticle is formed between the
hypodermis and the old cuticle with or without
absorption of parts of the old cuticle.
4. Rupture and ecdysis of the old cuticle, which
allow escape of the juvenile or young adult
form.

STIMULUS: Exact nature of stimulus is not known.

1. Growth to certain size
2. Biological clock----gradual loading sudden discharge of
neurosecretaty cells.
3. Host root exudates plant parasitic nematodes
4. Movement from one environment to another.

GROWTH IN NEMATODES
1. It is a discontinuous process
2. Four molts during development
3. Growth continue through the molts
4. Stop growth before, during, and just after molt
5. Maximum growth between molts.
