Problem Set-1
1. You dissolve 0.1 g of the polystyrene in 100 mL of toluene and measure the flow times at 25 °C
in Ubbelohde viscometer. The results are as follows: pure toluene 110 sec, polymer solution 140
sec. Calculate the molecular weight of polystyrene. (Mark- Houwink parameters of a=0.58 and
K=39x10-3 dL g-1.)
2. The following viscosity data were obtained for the solutions of polystyrene (PS) in toluene at
30oC:
C (g dL-1) t (s)
0 65.8
0.54 101.2
1.08 144.3
1.62 194.6
2.16 257.0
Using this information:
a) Plot the reduced viscosity as a function of concentration.
b) Calculate the molecular weight of PS using Mark- Houwink parameters of a=0.725 and
K=1.1x10-4 dL g-1.
3. The viscosities of a series of solutions of polystyrene in toluene were measured at 25°C and the
results obtained are summarized below in table. Determine the molecular weight of this polymer?
(Mark- Houwink parameters of a=0.5 and K=4.5x10-4 dL g-1.)
C (g dL-1) Viscosity (kg m-1 s-1)
0 2.79
2 3.08
4 3.37
6 3.68
8 3.99
10 4.32

4. In a polymer sample, 30% of molecules have a molecular mass of 20,000, 40% have 30,000 and
the rest 60,000. What are the weight average molecular mass and number average molecular
mass?
5. A polymer sample contains 9 moles of chains have molecular of 30,000 g/mol and 5 moles of
chains have molecular weight of 50,000 g/mol. Calculate the weight average molecular
mass and number average molecular mass?
6. A polymer sample contains 105 moles of chains with molecular weight 104 g/mol and 106 moles
of chains with molecular weight 103 g/mol. Calculate the number average molecular weight ,
the weight average molecular weight and the polydispersity index. What do you think about
the distribution of molecular weight of this sample (polydisperse or monodisperse).
7. What is the average molecular weight of polystyrene is its intrinsic viscosity is 1.42 g/dm 3 and the
constants “a” and “k” are 0.88 and 1.5 10-3, respectively.
