Problem 1 (40 pts)

Catalytic reforming is commonly used to convert para5inic hydrocarbons in crude naphtha
into a reformate containing bulk aromatic chemicals such as benzene, toluene, and
ethylbenzene. These chemicals are utilized as raw materials in manufacturing plastics if they
have enough purity. Suppose the e5luent from the catalytic reactor contains 60 kg/s ethyl
benzene, 20 kg/s benzene, and 10 kg/s toluene at 1 bar and 100oC. It is suggested that this
stream can be separated in a flash distillation unit operating at 0.6 bar 100oC.
a) Determine if this mixture flashes.
b) If the mixture flashes, determine the composition and amount of the equilibrium liquid
and vapor.
c) It is suggested that the purity of chemicals can be increased if the liquid exiting the flash
distillation unit is fed into another flash distillation unit. The second unit is operated at 1.5
bar and 140oC. Determine if this mixture flashes. If so, determine the composition and
amounts of the equilibrium phases.
d) Calculate the amount of heat added or removed from the drums per mole of feed.

Problem 2 (60 pts)

A methanol/n-propanol solution containing 35 mole% methanol will be rectified in a plate
column equipped with a partial reboiler and a total condenser at 101.3 kPa to produce a top
product with 95 mole% purity in methanol and a bottom product with 95 mole% purity in n-
propanol. The external reflux ratio is 5/3. It is suggested that the feed at 1000 kmole/h can be
introduced to the column from the 5th stage at 5 di5erent thermal conditions, as shown in
the table below.
a) Calculate the q-parameter for each feed condition, write it in the Table, and mark all
feed conditions on the T-xy diagram,
b) Find the number of theoretical stages for each case using the Lewis method and
discuss the influence of feed thermal condition on the number of stages. Which feed
condition do you suggest for the column design?
c) It is claimed that the energy cost for running the distillation column can be controlled
by adjusting the feed thermal conditions. Do you agree with this proposal? Please justify
your answer.

Note: Please show the derivation of all equations. Write your assumptions and justify your
assumptions. For the stage-by-stage calculations, draw each stage, show the composition
of more volatile components in vapor and liquid phases, and show your calculations clearly.

5 At 99oC

T-xy and xy-diagrams of the system at 101.3 kPa are given below.
Assume that “constant molar over-flow” is applicable, and the latent heat of vaporization of
the solution is 40000 kJ/mol. Specific heats of liquid and vapor feed are 135 kJ/kmoloC and
85 kJ/kmoloC, respectively.
