Magnetic Force
What is it?
It is a non-contact force. There is a source of the magnetic field. It is a
magnetite ore containing the metal iron, cobalt and nickel. A force field is a
region in space around the source where a force can be experienced.

Ferromagnetism: the ability of the 3 metals to become magnetized. The


particles are orientated to line up in the same direction creating poles.

The magnetic field lines are drawn to indicate the magnetic field:

Rules:

1. Lines represent the field. They never cross each other.


2. The lines create a pattern that is elliptical.
3. The strength of the field is represented by how close the lines are. The
closer the lines, the stronger the field.
4. There is a direction of the field indicated by an arrow drawn on the
line.
On the outside of the magnet: direction is North to South.
On the inside of the magnet: direction is South to North.
5. The pattern is symmetrical left and right, top and bottom.

The interacting between a magnetic field and an electric field, results in


movement. This phenomenon is known as electromagnetism.
