OBJECTIVES
The objectives for C2 is to determine the physical properties of coarse aggregate
that is required in concrete mix design. Specific gravity, absorption and sieve analysis test is conducted to determine the properties of fine aggregates. PROCEDURES Specific Gravity and Absorption 1. About 2 kg of aggregate sample is taken then is washed to remove the fine aggregate 2. The washed aggregate is then soak in water for 24 hours. 3. After 24 hours has passed the aggregate is then removed from water and is wiped with an absorbent cloth till the surface of the aggregates has achieved saturated surface dry surface. 4. The aggregate is then weighted to get the reading of saturated surface dry aggregate. 5. The empty wire basket is then weighted to get the initial reading 6. The aggregate is then placed into the empty wire basket. 7. The wire basket is then jolted for 25 times in water to remove entrapped air. 8. Then the wire basket is hanged under the weighing machine and the weight of wire basket in water is then taken. 9. Then empty the aggregates from the basket on another try and return the empty wire basket to the water, jolt it 25 times and weigh in water note down the weight of wire basket suspended in water. 10.The coarse aggregate is placed in a shallow tray and heated in the ventilated oven at 100 to 110 ˚c for 24 hours. 11.Then it is cooled, the coarse aggregate is weighed to get oven dried reading.
Sieve Analysis Test
1. About 2 kg of aggregate is dried in a well-ventilated oven at 110℃ for 24 hours
and weighed. 2. Each sieve is cleaned by using a brush and weighed. 3. The sieves are ranged from the lowest-opening sieve to the largest-opening sieve. 4. Use the sieve size of 37.5 mm, 20 mm, 14 mm, 10 mm, 6.3 mm, 3.35 mm, 1.18 mm, 425 μm, 150 μm, 75 μm. 5. The aggregate has been prepared through a series of sieves with a sieve shaker machine for 5 minutes. 6. Every weight of aggregate retained on each sieve is calculated. All weight of aggregate in total will be compared with the original weight of the aggregate. 7. The readings of weight of empty sieve, weight of sieve with retained aggregate and weight of aggregate retained are recorded. 8. The graph of the sieve analysis curve for the aggregate and cumulative percentage retained are plotted. 9. The fineness modulus for the aggregate sample is calculated
