Date of experiment…………………….. Date of Submission…25/04/2023…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the operating characteristics of a Pelton Turbine at a constant speed.

DESCRIPTION:-

The Pelton turbine has a runner mounted over the main shaft. The runner consists of buckets fitted to the disc.
The buckets have the shape of double ellipsoidal cups. A casting made of Perspex allows visualization of flow
around the buckets. A nozzle fitted in the side casting directs the water jet over the ‘Splitter’ or center ridge of the
buckets. A spear operates inside the nozzle to control the water flow. On the other side of the shaft, a rope brake
is mounted for loading in the turbine.

SPECIFICATION:-

1) Turbine –Rated Power -1 H.P., Rated speed ............. rpm,

2) Pump- 5 H.P. Monoblock Pump with D.O.L. starter, Rated speed 2850 rpm, rated discharge -14 lps.
3) Measuring Instruments :
(a) Water Meter and stopwatch for discharge management.
(b) Pressure gauge to note down the pressure head.
(c) Optical tachometer to measure rpm of the Turbine shaft.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:-

1) Keep the bypass valve open.

2) Close nozzle by operating the spear. Green button of starter, so that pump starts running.
3) Slowly close the bypass valve until the rated speed of the Turbine is achieved.
4) Load the brake drum and adjust the bypass /spear to attain the rated speed. Note down the readings
in the observation table.
5) Repeat the procedure for different loads.

PRECAUTIONs:-

1) Before putting ‘ON’ the pump must see that the nozzle is closed by the spear and load on the brake
drum is released.
2) Use clean water to fill the tank.
3) Operate all the controls and switches gently.
4) Lubricate the bearings, before the experiment.
5) Drain the water after completion of the experiment.
