Answer the following five exercises:
Exercise 1: (6.25pts)

Given the charge of the following cations:’ K+, Ag+,Na+,Mg2+, H+, , NH4+, Al3+

Anions: CO32-, NO3-, Cl-, HO-

1.1- Complete and Balance the following chemical equations: (5)

a- Mg (s) + 2 HCl(aq) → MgCl2+ H2
b- (NH4)2CO3 (aq) + 2HCl(aq) → 2NH4Cl+ H2O+ CO2
c- AgNO3 (aq) + HCl(aq) → AgCl+ HNO3
d- NH4NO3(aq) + KOH →NH3+ H2O+ KNO3
e- 3NaOH(aq) + AlCl3(aq) → Al(OH)3+ 3NaCl
1.2- Identify the gases released in equations a, b and d. (0.75)
a: Hydrogen gas gives a pop sound near a burning match
b: carbon dioxide turns lime water turbid
d: ammonia gas turns red litmus paper into blue
1.3- Give the name and color of the precipitates formed in equations c-e (0.5)
C: silver chloride a white precipitate that turns gray when exposed to light
E: Aluminium hydroxide is a white gelatinous precipitate

Exercise 2: (2)
Given Kw=10-14

Part 1: Choose, by justifying, the right answer:

2.1.1-The label on a bottle of a household product containing ammonium hydroxide solution

shows its pH equal to 12.
i. [HO-]= 10-2 mol.L- = 10pH-14= 1012-14=10-2
ii. [HO-]= 6.33 x10-3 mol.L-
iii. [HO-]= 10-7 mol.L-
2.1.2- Given that sodium hydroxide of formula NaOH is a strong base, its dissociation
equation in water is:

Page 1 of 4
i. NaOH→ Na++ H+
ii. NaOH ↔ Na++ HO-
iii. NaOH → Na++ HO- it is a strong base that dissociates completely into hydroxide ions
2.1.3- Choose the equation of the reaction of formic acid of formula CH3COOH with
water:
i. CH3COOH +H2O → CH3COO- + H3O+
ii. CH3COOH + H2O ↔ CH3COO- + H3O+ it is weak acid that dissociates partially into
hydrogen ion
iii. CH3COOH + H2O ↔ CH3COO- +HO-
2.1.4- A hydrochloric acid solution of [H3O+]= 10-2 mol.L- has a :
i. pH=12
ii. pH=2 pH=-log 10-2=2
iii. pH=1
Exercise 3: (11.5pt)

Prove that concentration of solution S0 is 3.07 mol.L- (0.75)

m solute nxM CxMx 100

% m= x100= x100=
msolution dxV d
%xd
C= =3.07 mol.L-
Mx 100

Preparation of HCl solution (S)

2.1- Calculate the pH of solution (S).(0.5)

pH=-log0.04=1.4

2.2- Choose from document-2 the appropriate glasswares needed for preparation of solution
(S). Justify. (1)

During dilution n solute is conserved

75=250/V0 then V0= 3.33 mL

The needed glasswares are: 5 mL graduated pipet and 250 mL volumetric flask

Titration of solution (S)

3.1-Label the titration setup in document-3 (1.75)

A=clamp, b=burette; c=KOH solution; d =Erlenmeyer flask

E= HCl solution F= magnetic bar g= magnetic stirrer

3.2- Write the net ionic equation of titration.(0.5)

H++ HO-→ H2O

3.3- List the characteristics of titration reaction.(1)

Page 2 of 4
Complete, spontaneous, rapid, and unique

3.4- Write the procedure of the above titration reaction.(1.5)

1. Fill in the 25mL buret with KOH till the line mark.

2. Transfer using a transfer pipet (20 ml) and a pipet bulb HCl into a flask (250 ml)
containing a magnetic bar, add a few ml of BTB

3. Switch on the magnetic stirrer.

4. Add the KOH from the buret into the flask drop by drop until color changes from
yellow to green. Equivalence is reached.

5. Switch off the magnetic stirrer, record the volume added at equivalence.

3.4- Show that the molar concentration of solution (S) is 4x10-2mol.L-.(1.5)

At equivalence:

¿ ¿ ) =(n HO− ¿ ¿)
(n H + ❑ flask
1 added from the burette to reach equivalence

CxV C xV
( ) H+ =( ) HO-
❑ 1

Ca=4x10-2mol.L-.

3.5- Deduce the concentration of solution (S0). (0.5)

75=C0/C then C0=75x0.04= 3 mol.L-

3.6-Calculate the percentage by mass of the commercial solution (S0). Knowing that the
percentage error should not exceed 5%, is the value on the label verified? (1.5)

m solute nxM C 0 xMx 100

% m= x100= x100=
msolution dxV d

=3x36.5x100/1180=9.28%

% error=9.5-9.28/9.5 x100=2.3%<5% verified

3.7- Choose with justification according to the species present in solution at equivalence, the
nature of the obtained solution: (1)

i- acidic ii. Basic iii- neutral

since water is neutral and (K+ and Cl-) are spectator ions that do not change pH

Exercise 4: (5.25pts)

Page 3 of 4
3.2g of Zinc (Zn) is added to 200 ml of 2 mol. L- hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. It
produces zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and hydrogen gas (H2).

1. Write the balanced chemical equation.(0.75)

Zn+ 2HCl→ ZnCl2+ H2
2. Write the ionic equation.(0.5)
Zn+ 2(H++ Cl-)→ Zn2++ 2 Cl-+ H2

3. Deduce the net ionic equations.(0.75)

Zn+ 2H+→ Zn2++ H2
4. Indicate the spectator ion.(0.5)
Cl-
5. Is the above mixture stoichiometric? If not, indicate the limiting reactant.(1.5)
Check for stoichiometry
R1= nZn/1=m/M=3.2/65= 0.05
R2= nH+/2= CxV/2=2x0.2/2=0.2
R1<R2 then Zn is the limiting
6. Calculate the volume of the gas liberated at STP conditions.(1.25)
According to stoichiometry:
nZn/1=nH2/1=V/Vm=0.05
V=0.05x22.4=1.12 L
