Reservoir Simulation Strategies

Lect… Prediction performance

Dr. Taha Moawad

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Objectives

- Predict reservoir behavior

-Estimate performance in new reservoirs

-Optimize operating conditions

-Maximize economic gain

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Limitations of Future Performance to Predictions

- This might occur when the new displacement process

was not part of the original history match, and may not
yield correct results Examples:
-converting a depleted reservoir to EOR or
waterflooding
-converting a depleted reservoir to a gas storage
-If new changes which are not expected (failure of
pump,…new well completion….) occur,…
Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Other Applications of Performance Predictions

- Laboratory studies (coreflooding, small-core studies,

relative permeability studies)
-parametric studies
-Investigation of vertical flow effects (cross-sectional
model)
-Pilot projects

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Number and Timing of New Wells Based on

- Availability of drilling rigs

-Time required to drill a well
-Budget considerations
-In some cases, new well locations can be selected
automatically by simulator
Chapter 5: Prediction performance

New Wells Data

- Skin factor
-it can be estimated from drilling and completion
data

Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Economic Limits
- Determine the operating life of a project in future
performance prediction

-Are often minimum production rates for oil and gas, for
individual wells or the entire field

-Producing GOR and water oil ratio can also be used

-Alternative approach – allow an economics model to

determine when a project is uneconomic.
Chapter 5: Prediction performance

Transitioning From History to Predictions:

-The first performance prediction is usually a base case

-transitioning from history matching to performance prediction means

wells are no longer controlled by known operating conditions, but
rather by an estimated future operating scenario

-The well and field production rates and fluid cuts should be similar
to recent past history
-Methods for smooth transition from history to prediction
-use the same well constraints of wells when it is present
before (if it is rate or pressure)
-use the average well rate or pressur from the last several days
or weeks or months
