The Cartesian Plane

The Cartesian Plane, also known as the coordinate plane, is a two-dimensional plane defined by a

horizontal line (x-axis) and a vertical line (y-axis). These axes intersect at the origin (0, 0), dividing

the plane into four quadrants.

### Key Concepts:

- The Cartesian plane is divided into four quadrants:

- Quadrant I: x > 0, y > 0

- Quadrant II: x < 0, y > 0

- Quadrant III: x < 0, y < 0

- Quadrant IV: x > 0, y < 0

- A point on the plane is represented by an ordered pair (x, y).

- The x-coordinate represents the horizontal distance, and the y-coordinate represents the vertical

distance.

### Solved Examples:

1. Identify the quadrant of the point (4, -3):

x > 0 and y < 0, so the point lies in Quadrant IV.

2. Plot the point (-2, 5) on the Cartesian plane:

Move 2 units left on the x-axis and 5 units up on the y-axis. Mark the point.

3. Find the distance between points (1, 2) and (4, 6):

Distance = sqrt((x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2)

= sqrt((4 - 1)^2 + (6 - 2)^2) = sqrt(9 + 16) = sqrt(25) = 5 units

4. Determine the midpoint of (3, 4) and (7, 8):

Midpoint = ((x1 + x2)/2, (y1 + y2)/2)

= ((3 + 7)/2, (4 + 8)/2) = (5, 6)

5. What is the slope of the line passing through (-3, -2) and (2, 3)?

Slope = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

= (3 - (-2))/(2 - (-3)) = 5/5 = 1

### Real-World Applications:

- The Cartesian plane is used in navigation systems to locate places on maps.

- In physics, it helps in plotting graphs of motion and forces.

- Architects and engineers use it to design blueprints and plan structures.

### Practice Problems:

1. Plot the points (5, -4), (-3, 6), and (0, 0) on the Cartesian plane.

2. Identify the quadrant of the point (-7, -2).

Solution: Quadrant III (both x and y are negative).

3. Find the distance between points (0, 0) and (3, 4).

Solution: Distance = sqrt((3 - 0)^2 + (4 - 0)^2) = sqrt(9 + 16) = 5 units.

4. Determine the midpoint of (-4, 2) and (6, 10).

Solution: Midpoint = ((-4 + 6)/2, (2 + 10)/2) = (1, 6).

5. Calculate the slope of the line passing through (2, 5) and (-1, -4).

Solution: Slope = (-4 - 5)/(-1 - 2) = -9/-3 = 3.
