Fractions: Addition and Subtraction

Fractions represent parts of a whole and are written as a ratio of two numbers: the numerator (top

number) and denominator (bottom number). Addition and subtraction of fractions involve finding a

common denominator.

### Key Concepts:

- To add or subtract fractions, make the denominators the same (common denominator).

- Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers if necessary.

- Simplify the resulting fraction to its lowest terms.

### Solved Examples:

1. Add 1/4 and 3/4:

Denominators are the same, so add the numerators:

1/4 + 3/4 = (1 + 3)/4 = 4/4 = 1

2. Subtract 5/6 from 7/6:

Denominators are the same, so subtract the numerators:

7/6 - 5/6 = (7 - 5)/6 = 2/6 = 1/3 (simplified)

3. Add 2/3 and 1/4:

Find the least common denominator (LCD) of 3 and 4, which is 12:

2/3 = 8/12 and 1/4 = 3/12

8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12

4. Subtract 3/5 from 4/7:

Find the LCD of 5 and 7, which is 35:

3/5 = 21/35 and 4/7 = 20/35

21/35 - 20/35 = 1/35

5. Add 2 1/3 and 1 3/4 (mixed numbers):

Convert to improper fractions:

2 1/3 = 7/3 and 1 3/4 = 7/4

Find the LCD of 3 and 4, which is 12:

7/3 = 28/12 and 7/4 = 21/12

28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12 = 4 1/12 (mixed number)

### Real-World Applications:

- Fractions are used in cooking recipes to measure ingredients.

- In construction, fractions help calculate measurements for materials like wood or tiles.

- Fractions are used in financial calculations, such as splitting bills or investments.

### Practice Problems:

1. Add 3/8 and 1/4.

Solution: 1/4 = 2/8, so 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8.

2. Subtract 2/9 from 5/6.

Solution: LCD = 18, so 2/9 = 4/18 and 5/6 = 15/18. Subtract: 15/18 - 4/18 = 11/18.

3. Add 1 1/2 and 2 2/3.

Solution: 1 1/2 = 3/2 and 2 2/3 = 8/3. LCD = 6, so 3/2 = 9/6 and 8/3 = 16/6. Add: 9/6 + 16/6 = 25/6

= 4 1/6.

4. Subtract 7/8 from 3/4.

Solution: 3/4 = 6/8, so 6/8 - 7/8 = -1/8.

5. Simplify the result of adding 5/12 and 7/18.

Solution: LCD = 36, so 5/12 = 15/36 and 7/18 = 14/36. Add: 15/36 + 14/36 = 29/36.
