Question One: (GROUP A)

(a) Simplify log 1 𝑥 𝑛 and hence log 1 64√2

(c) If 𝑎 = log 𝑏 𝑐 , 𝑏 = log 𝑐 𝑎 , 𝑐 = log 𝑎 𝑏. Prove that 𝑎𝑏𝑐 = 1. (08 marks).

Question Two (GROUP B)

(a) Show that the vectors 𝑎 = 2𝑖 − 𝑗 + 𝑘, and 𝑏 = 𝑖 − 3𝑗 − 5𝑘 and 𝑐 = 3𝑖 − 4𝑗 − 4𝑘


form a right angled triangle.
Find all the angles and the area of the triangle. (10 marks).
(b) A force of (2𝑖 − 𝑗 + 𝑘) newtons acts on a line through point P having co-ordinates
(0, 3, 1) metres. Determine the moment vector and its magnitude about point Q having
co-ordinates (4, 0, −1) metres. (05 marks).
(c) Given that 𝑷 = 4𝒊 + 𝒋 − 2𝒌, 𝑸 = 3𝒊 − 2𝒋 + 𝒌 and 𝑹 = 𝒊 − 2𝒌.
Find 𝑃 × (4𝑅 × 𝑄) (05 marks)

Question Three (GROUP C)

(a) The resistance R of an electrical conductor at temperature 𝜃 0 𝐶 is given by


𝑅 = 𝑅0 𝑒 𝛼𝜃 Where 𝛼 𝑖𝑠 a constant and 𝑅0 = 5 × 103 Ω. Determine the value of 𝛼
correct to four significant figures when 𝑅 = 6 × 103 Ω and 𝜃 = 15000 𝐶. Also, find
the temperature correct to the nearest degree when 𝑅 = 5.4 × 103 Ω. (07 marks).
(b) By completing Squares, find the maximum value of 17 + 3𝑥 − 4𝑥 2 . State the value of 𝑥
for which maximum occurs. (06 marks)

(c) The voltage V volts across an inductor is shown in the table below.

Question Four (GROUP D)

(a) A surveyor wants to know the height of a tower. From a given point on the ground, the
surveyor finds that the angle of elevation of the top of the tower as 420 40′ . The
surveyor moves back 40𝑚 to the second point and finds the angle of elevation to the
top of the tower as 250 10′ . Determine the height of the tower. (10marks)

(b) Given that 𝐴 and 𝐵 are two acute angles such that cos 𝐴 = 1⁄2 and sin 𝐵 = 1⁄3,

Prove that:

Question Five (GROUP E )

A section of 100 Electrical workers were assigned to a supervisor to carry out the following
tasks:
Cut down trees (T), Climb Poles (P) and splice wires(S).The Supervisor was tasked to determine
their performance and make a report to the manager. Given that the supervisor made the
following report below:
45 can cut tall trees
50 can climb poles
57 can splice wires
20 can climb poles and splice wires.
28 can cut trees and climb poles.
25 can cut trees and splice wires.
11 can do all the three.
10 cannot do any of the three activities.

(a) Summarise the report given to the Manager using a Venn diagram.
(b) From the Venn diagram, determine

(c) Find the number of workers who can perform only one task.

(b) Calculate the velocity vector and its magnitude for a particle rotating about
the 𝑧-axis at an angular velocity of (3𝑖 − 𝑗 + 2𝑘) rad/s when the position
vector of the particle is at (𝑖 − 5𝑗 + 4𝑘)𝑚.
(c) Show that the points 𝐴(2𝑖 − 𝑗 + 𝑘), 𝐵(𝑖 − 3𝑗 − 5𝑘) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶(3𝑖 − 4𝑗 − 4𝑘) are
vertices of a right angled triangle. Hence find all angles and the Area.

(a) Show that the points 𝐴(−2𝑖 + 3𝑗 + 5𝑘), 𝐵(𝑖 + 2𝑗 + 3𝑘), 𝐶(7𝑖 − 𝑘) are collinear.
(b) Find 𝜶 so that the points 𝑨(𝟏, −𝟓), 𝑩(−𝟒, 𝟓)𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪(𝜶, 𝟕) are Collinear.
(c) The points 𝐴 and 𝐵 have position vectors 𝒂 and 𝒃 respectively, relative to the origin
𝑂, where 𝒂 = −𝟐𝒊 + 𝟑𝒋 and 𝒃 = 𝟐𝒊 − 𝒋 respectively.
(i) Find the position vectors of the point 𝑃 which divides 𝐴𝐵 externally in
the ratio 3: 1 .
(ii) Find the position vectors of the point 𝑄 which divides 𝐴𝐵 internally in
the ratio 3: −2 .
(iii) Find the angle between the position vectors of points A and B.

(a) (i) The polynomial 3𝑥 4 + 𝜆𝑥 3 + 12𝑥 2 + 𝜇𝑥 + 4 has a factor of 𝑥 − 1 and


leaves a remainder 18 when divided by 𝑥 + 2. Find the values of 𝜆 and 𝜇.

(ii)When 2𝑥 3 + 5𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 3 is divided by 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2 has a


remainder of 𝐵𝑥 + 𝐶 where 𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 are constants. Determine the values of
𝐵 and C.
