13. For the reaction R → P, the concentration of reactant changes from 0.03M to 0.02M in 25 min.
Calculate the average rate of reaction in seconds.

Ans:

14. How will you account for the following?

i) Zr and Hf sizes are almost same.
Ans:This is because of poor screening effect by 4f electrons, which lead to the
lanthanoid contraction.Hence,is the reason of Zn and Hf have almost equal
atomic size.
ii) What is the composition of mischmetal.
Ans: It is an alloy of cerium and lanthanum with some rare earth metals
15. Explain Friedel-Crafts acylation with equation by taking chlorobenzene as
example.
Ans:
Chlorobenzene reacts with acid chloride in the presence of anhydrous
aluminium chloride forms ortho and para acyl chlorobenzene.
16. Explain Kolbe’s reaction.
Ans:

When phenol is treated with sodium hydroxide, sodium phenoxide is

produced, which on treating with carbon dioxide, followed by acidification,
undergoes electrophilic substitution to give Salicylic acid as the main product.
17. Give the preparation of phenol from cumene.
Ans:

cumene is first oxidized in the presence of air of cumene hydro-peroxide.

Then, cumene hydroxide is treated with dilute acid to prepare phenol and
acetone as by-products.
18. Explain carbylamine reaction with an example.
Ans: Aliphatic/aromatic primary amines are heated with
chloroform/alcoholic KOH to form foul-smelling alkyl isocyanides or
carbylamines.

PART- C
III. ANSWER ANY FIVE OF THE FOLLOWING. EACH QUESTION CARRIES
3MARKS. 5×3= 15
19. Discuss the principle involved in the manufacture of ammonia by Haber’s
process along with the chemical equation.
Ans: 3

N2+3H2⇌2NH3
The reaction proceeds in the forward direction
The reaction is exothermic.
In accordance with Le Chatelier’s principle, high pressure would favour the
formation of ammonia.
The optimum conditions for the production of ammonia are a
Pressure -200atm,
Temperature -700K
Catalyst such as iron oxide with small amounts of K2O and Al2O3 to increase
the rate of attainment of equilibrium.
20. Give any three reasons for the anomalous behavior of oxygen. 3
Ans:Reasons for the anomalous behavior of oxygen are given below.
1) Oxygen is small in size.
2) Oxygen has high electronegativity.
3) The valence shell of oxygen lacks vacant d orbitals.

Ans: Br2+(Excess)5F2→2BrF5
22. i) Many copper(I) compounds are unstable in aqueous solution and
undergo disproportionation. Explain.
Ans: Cu2+ Is more stable than Cu+ because of much more negative
ΔhydH∘(hydration enthalpy) of Cu2+ than Cu+, which more than
compensates for seconds ionisation enthalpy.
ii) What are interstitial compounds? 2+1
Ans: The compounds in which small atoms like H, C, N, etc.,
occupy interstitial sites in the crystal lattice are called interstitial compounds.

Ans: 1.The central metal atom possess two types of valencies: i Primary
valencies and ii Secondary valencies.
2. Primary valencies denote oxidation state of the metal ion in the complex
and are always satisfied by the negative ions.
3. Secondary valencies correspond to the coordination number of the metal
ion in the complex.
4. The geometry of the complex depends upon the arrangements of the
secondary valencies in the space.
