(Safety Signs)
Safety Signs
• Construction safety signs must follow a particular shape and
color to express a certain message.
• It’s important if you are on a construction site that you
understand the meaning to keep yourself and others safe.
• Safety signs lessen the likelihood of accidents to employees
and non-employees, and therefore creates a safer working
environment.
Importance of safety signages
• The public can find these safety signs in a variety of situations,
including workplaces, public areas, and certain products.
• On other hand, standard colors and basic shapes for safety
signs are therefore important to help ensure that the different
types of safety signs, and the safety messages they convey, are
easily recognizable.

appropriate decision,

Categories of Safety Signs
• Prohibition Signs
• Warning Signs
• Mandatory Signs
• Emergency Signs
Categories (Prohibition Signs)
• A sign prohibiting behavior likely to increase risk
or cause danger (e.g., “No access for
unauthorized personnel”)
• These signs should be used for “Do Not”
commands. For example – to indicate that
smoking is not allowed in a particular area.
• In the workplace they should be used to
reinforce instructions prohibiting dangerous
activities.
• Signs prohibiting an activity appear as a circular
red band with a single diagonal cross line
descending from left to right at a 45-degree
angle. The background should be solid white with
the imagery indicating the nature of the
command in black.
Prohibition Signs
Categories (Warning Signs)
• A sign giving warning of a hazard or danger
(e.g., “Danger: High Voltage”)
• These signs should be used to make people
aware of a nearby danger. For example, a
flammable liquid store.
• Signs warning of a particular hazard appear
as a black band in the shape of an equilateral
triangle.
• They don't tell you not to do something, or to
do something. They simply aim to make you
aware of a danger, so you can protect
yourself.
• The background within the band should be
yellow with the imagery indicating the type
of hazard in black, positioned centrally on the
sign.
Warning Signs
Categories (Mandatory Signs)
• A safety sign prescribing specific behavior
(e.g., “Personal Protective Equipment Must
Be Worn”)
• These signs should be used to indicate
actions that must be carried out in order to
comply with statutory requirements. For
example, an area of a construction site where
hard hats should be worn should have
appropriate signs at the entry points.
• Mandatory signs are there to tell you to do
something. Consider these the opposite of
prohibition signs.
• Signs indicating mandatory requirements
consist of a blue circle with the pictogram or
text in white positioned centrally.
Mandatory Signs
Categories (Emergency Signs)
• A sign giving information on emergency
exits, first aid, or rescue facilities (e.g.,
“Emergency Exit”)
• These information signs should be used to
indicate escape routes, emergency exits
and first aid equipment.
• Safe condition signs appear as a green
rectangle or square with the imagery or
text in white positioned centrally.

When are safety signs needed?
You need to follow the below steps to determine if to use a safety sign:
• Firstly, you need to conduct a risk assessment: by doing this, you will
be able to spot the potential hazards in the workplace and can note
the most significant areas in need of a safety sign. When assessing
the area, you need to consider the likes of flammable atmospheres,
electricity and hot surfaces.
• Make sure you update any existing signs and that you reassess their
surrounding area. When doing this also make sure each sign is still
relevant so that other important signs are not depreciated. Also,
make sure you clean and/or replace all damaged, defaced,
discolored and unclean signs.
• Make sure that you have a control measure put in place with every
potential hazard you have spotted. You cannot simply put up a
warning sign and not deal with any potential consequences.
• It would be best if you paired each safety sign with a logical sign with
a solution. E.g. A “high noise area” would be pair with a “hearing
protection must be worn sign”.
