Sheet (2)

1-Calculate the mass of air used for combustion 50 gram of heptane (C7H16), (20% excess
air) and calculate the volume of flue gases at 40o C and 770 mmHg, the mass of condensed
water and partial pressures of the flue gases. Calculate the maximum temperature of the
burner in the above problem. Assume the temperature of air and fuel 25o C, heat value of
fuel 11 Kcal/ gram, and efficiency of furnace 60%.

2- A burner used Butane (C4H10) and 20 % excess air, it is desired the temperature of burner
equal 1370oC, the temperature of the surrounding is 20o C, calculate the temperature of the
inlet air. Heat value of fuel =650 Kcal/gmole, and efficiency of furnace 60%.

3- A burner used a fuel with the following composition:

C4H8 14%, C3H8 22 %,

C4H10 29 %, C5H10 35%,

a- Estimate weight of air used for the combustion of 100 gram of this fuel.
b- The density of flue gas ( combustion products) at 377 ℃ and 770 ℃
(NOTE: This burner used 40% excess air)

4- A burner used a pentane fuel (C5H12) at constant pressure with 25% excess air.
Estimate the maximum temperature of the burner.
Heat value of the fuel = 12 Kcal /gram
Insulation Efficiency = 65%
Surround temperature = 18 o C. In case of combustion 7.2 gram of pentane (C5H12)
in the conditions mentioned above:
-Estimate the volume of air required for the combustion at S.T.P
-Estimate the volume of combustion product at if cooled to 27 ℃ and 760 mmHg.
Vapor pressure of water at 27 o C = 37 mm Hg.

5-A burner uses propane (C3H8) at constant pressure with excess 20 % , estimate the max
temperature of if the air used for combustion is preheated to 400 ℃. The heat value of fuel
12.5 Kcal/ gram of fuel. The surrounding temperature is 26 o C, Insulation Efficiency =
70%.

6-Airplane used C8H18 as a fuel, what is the percentage of the excess air used for complete
combustion that about to condense water vapor in the flue gases at 50°C and 736 mm Hg.
Then calculate the density of the flue gases and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide if the
saturated vapor pressure at 50°C is 93.4 mm Hg.
