Orthopedic Hardware

Orthopedic Hardware are supplies used inside the operating room or

nergency room, either surgical instruments, implants or fixators, to
manage and correct different orthopedicdisorders.
Phases in the Management of Fracture: (4 R's)
1. RECOGNITION PHASE- Involves history taking skills of nurses to
assess the type of fracture and its manifestations specifically the
signs and symptoms. Recognition of fracture is also done initially
through X-ray.
2. REDUCTION PHASE-Putting back the bone to itsproper alignment.
It is categorized into two:
a) Close Reduction - manual manipulation of the bone back to
its proper alignment
b) Open Reduction - surgical intervention in aligning the bo
back to its normal form

3. RETENTION PHASE- Maintaining the alignment of the fractured

bone using immobilization devices and supplies such as cast, brace,
traction, implants or fixators. Fixators are categorized into two:
a) Internal Fixators - implants or fixators that are placed inside
the skin through surgical procedure and are usually used in a
closed type of fracture or deformity.
b) External Fixators - fixators that protrudes through the skin,
usually with the use of pins, screws or tong and are usually
used in an open or compound type of fracture.
4. REHABILITATION PHASE-Puttingand helping the patient achieve
the optimum level of functioning after having the Retention Phase.
