NOTES ON THE PROGRAM

First semester percentages are as follows:

25% – Midterms (MT)


15% – Quizzes (QZ)
2.5% – Writing Portfolio (PEP)
2.5% – Speaking Assessment

SPAN 2 - Formal Assessment


 There will be one midterm (MT02) at the end of the span (Language, Vocabulary, Reading, Listening,
and Writing). This exam will have a make-up.
 There will be five quizzes and two Portfolio-end-products (PEPs). These exams will NOT have a make-
up.
 The quizzes, except the listening quiz, may include a separate vocabulary section.
 All the teaching points included in the teaching materials (the DBE handouts and the coursebooks as
long as they are not in the omitted pages) are included in the testing syllabus. These teaching points
may be tested in different parts of the exams. For example, linkers taught in the writing handouts may
be tested in language sections of the exams.
 The language objectives and vocabulary in active vocabulary lists covered in the first span are also
included in the testing syllabus.

GRADE & ATTENDANCE SUBMISSION


 The grades of each quiz must be entered to DBEOnline within a week after it is administered.
 All the exams (Quizzes, Midterms, and Portfolio End Product tasks) must be collected and returned to
the archive room.
 The final date for entering all grades (Quizzes, SA, WPs, and Attendance 06) is 9 January by 17:00.
 *PEP1 appears as WP01 on DBEOnline. PEP2 appears as WP02.
SPEAKING ASSESMENT (SA)
 There will be ONE formal speaking assessment (2.5 % of overall grades) in the 2nd Span.

1- The first item with the name of the coursebook presents all the audio and visual material of
the book unit by unit. Choose the unit you would like to teach, and press the “teach” button.
2- Link to Pearson’s coursebook app for mobile devices
3- Extra activities and resources which include “checkpoint” activities, downloadable audio files
of the coursebook, audio scripts, video scripts, and the videos themselves

use it offline.)

 Please make sure you cover all the exercises in the book unless they are marked as “omitted” in the
program.
 “Watch and reflect” sections are at the end of the book for each unit. In some videos, grammar
structures that have not been taught yet may be heard. Please do not feel the pressure to teach them.
It is enough that students get the gist of the videos.
 Please make sure you cover “Grammar Reference and Practice” and “Use of English” pages of each
unit in class OR make sure you assign those pages as homework and provide feedback. Students are
responsible for these pages. The items covered there are included in the testing syllabus.
 Students are responsible for doing the “Revision” section of each unit (please see the Outside Class
table on the second page of the program). You can check their homework and give feedback in any
way you see fit.
 High Note 1 and High Note 2 Workbook units are homework. Please assign each unit after you have
covered it in class. The workbook of the coursebook is highly recommended to the students as it
provides ample opportunities for recycling.
 The active vocabulary for each unit of High Note 1 and High Note 2 can be found at the end of each
unit. All the vocabulary items listed at the end of the units are included in the testing syllabus.

Speaking Assessment:
 This span, each student is expected to perform a presentation of about 3 minutes in class.
 The presentation rubric is provided for instructors to give feedback and mark the performances.

www.dbe.off-line.readings 1 (OLR 1)
 As indicated in the program, Unit 4 will be covered this span. Students are expected to watch the
YouTube video that covers the Skills Section and do the tasks on the assigned week before they come
to class.
 The active vocabulary lists of OLR 1 units are in the book, at the end of each unit. These are included
in the testing syllabus.

More to Read 1 (MTR 1)


 MTR 1 is both an in-class and outside reading book. While some of the reading texts are selected in
accordance with the topic, some are selected considering the grammar points taught that week or in
the previous week. Therefore, while doing these reading texts, please remember to draw your
students’ attention to the grammar items, vocabulary, and linkers taught during that week.
 Please do ALL of the in-class texts in class in order to show how to work with the texts and tasks in the
book. If you have extra time, feel free to do the outside readings in class as well.
 Please note that the vocabulary items of in-class and outside readings are listed in the vocabulary list for
the second span, and they are included in the testing syllabus.

HANDOUTS
Please note that minor changes may be made to the handouts, and the most recent versions will be
uploaded to ODTÜClass on a weekly basis. Please make sure that you and your students use the
uploaded versions of the handouts in class.

GRAMMAR HANDOUTS (GHOs)


 There are four grammar handouts this span. Please make sure you cover the teaching points in class
unless they are assigned as outside study materials. The handouts which are assigned as outside
study materials will be uploaded to ODTÜClass in H5P format on the assigned week so that the
students can cover them in their own time.

WRITING HANDOUTS (WHOs)


 The aim of the Writing Handouts is to introduce the components of more structured writing and make it
possible for the students to produce short texts in a paragraph format where they will be able to use and
recycle the content, vocabulary, language, and writing skills that they acquire in each unit.
- This span, students will be expected to start the writing portfolio. Students will write ONE type of
paragraph in this span (WHO5). This will be drafted. However, it will NOT be graded. For feedback, the
rubric for the independent writing will be used.
- It is expected that students write the 1st draft during class hours and submit it to their teacher.
- Suggested time for the 1st draft is 40-45 minutes.
- Please give feedback to the 1st draft as you see fit using the rubric.

 Please have students write their paragraphs during class hours. They may consult you and/or their
dictionaries while writing.
 Please note that the contents of the writing handouts are included in the testing syllabus. The linking
words/phrases that are taught as key language are included in the testing syllabus as well. Please also
note that they may be tested in language sections of the exams.
 Rubric for the Guided Writing is used to give feedback and later assess the writing performance of
students when they write e-mails and blog posts.
 There will be TWO Writing Portfolio grades (PEP1 & PEP2). In PEP 1 students will be tested on their
understanding of connectors (WHO2) and parts of an academic paragraph (WHO 3A & 3B). In PEP 2,
students will be tested on their understanding of parts of an academic paragraph and unity, coherence,
and cohesion (WHO 4).

SPEAKING HANDOUT (SHO)


 As indicated in the program, there is one speaking handout this span. It aims to help students practice
describing an object.
LISTENING HANDOUTS
 As indicated in the program, there are four listening handouts this span.
 In the second span, students will be tested on while-listening skills only.
 The listening handouts will also be uploaded in the “book” format to ODTÜClass so that students can do
listening without downloading the audio files. Students can listen to the tracks as many times as they
want in their own time.
 If you have extra time, feel free to do the outside LHOs in class as well.

READING HANDOUTS (RHOs) & READING PRACTICES (RPs)


 As indicated in the program, there is one reading handout (RHO 4 “Text Types and Simple Text
Structure” to be done in class this span.
 As in the first span, there are two reading practice handouts as outside class materials. These
materials will be uploaded to ODTÜClass weekly.
 The vocabulary items of RHO and RPs are in the active vocabulary list and are included in the testing
syllabus.
 If you have extra time, feel free to do the outside readings in class as well.

GRAMMAR INTO WRITING HANDOUTS (GWHO)


 These handouts are provided to cover certain grammar points which lead the students to improve
their productive skills. The grammar points covered in these handouts are included in the testing
syllabus. Please note that the teaching points in these handouts may be tested in language parts of
the exams. For example, process writing with passives may be tested in the language quizzes.

Grammar Worksheets
 These materials provide practice on grammar points which students are expected to know or are
covered in the coursebook. This span, there is one grammar worksheet. It provides practice on
relative clauses (with who/that/which).
REVISION HANDOUT
 This handout covers some of the points studied in this span. It is a general practice material for
students and aims to help students prepare for the Midterm.
VOCABULARY
 The active vocabulary items for High Note 1, High Note 2, and www.dbe.off-line.readings1 are listed in
the books at the end of each unit, and they are included in the testing syllabus. The active vocabulary
items of MTR and RP texts can be found in the active vocabulary list and are included in the testing
syllabus.

OUTSIDE CLASS
 Students are expected to study regularly in their own time using the materials indicated on the
“Outside class” table on the back page of the Program.
 As in the first span The Learning Sounds program will be uploaded to ODTÜClass Outside Section
weekly. This span, there will be two Learning Sounds program sections.
 The task types in outside class studies may be tested.
 The Further Practice (FP) handouts aim to supplement the points studied in that particular week or in
the previous one, and also offer practice in the use of the language structures, vocabulary, reading
and listening skills studied in High Note 1, High Note 2, and the other materials. Some FPs also
include reminders, suggestions, and read-aloud practice for students.
 No class hours have been allotted to the outside class materials.
 Please remind the students that it is very important they do the outside materials before the
upcoming exams.
 You may check these assignments in class if you have time. Alternatively, you can use your office
hours. Please be reminded that outside materials are the responsibility of the student. The
completion of the program is our priority.
