II. Data processing:
1. Determination of Torsion Modulus Dτ (Nm/rad):
- Based on the experiment results recorded in section “Determination of Torque”, we have
the following datasheet, where x = φ is the deflection angle measured in radians, and 𝑦 =
𝜏̅ = 𝐹 ̅ 𝑟 is the average torque measured in Nm:
𝜋 𝜋 𝜋 𝜋 5𝜋 𝜋
x (rad)
36 18 12 9 36 6
y (Nm) 0,025 0,059 0,086 0,126 0,161 0,197
- Using the above data, we obtain the following graph:
0,200
Torque τ (Nm)
0,150
0,100
0,050
0,000
0,000 0,100 0,200 0,300 0,400 0,500 0,600
Deflection Angle φ (rad)
- From the graph, we can deduce that the equation of the line of best fit is:
𝑦 = 0,395𝑥 − 0,012
- Hence, the average torsion modulus, i.e. the slope of the equation, is:
𝐷 = 𝑚 = 0,395 (𝑁𝑚/𝑟𝑎𝑑)
- We have:
7𝜋
𝑥̅ =
72
1
𝜎 = (𝑥 − 𝑥̅) ≈ 0,149
6 =
- Applying the Least Squares Fit (Linear Regression) method, we can find the uncertainty
of the torsion modulus Dτ as follows:
1 1
𝛥𝐷 = 𝛥𝑚 = √ 𝑦 − (𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏) ≈ 0,009 (𝑁𝑚/𝑟𝑎𝑑)
𝜎 6 4 =
𝑇̅ 0,9796
𝐼̅ = 𝐷 = 0,395 × = 9,601 × 10− (𝑘𝑔 ⋅ 𝑚 )
2𝜋 2𝜋
- The uncertainty of the moment of inertia of the steel rod is:
𝛥𝐷 𝛥𝑇 0,009 0,0053
𝛥𝐼 = 𝐼 ̅ + 2 = 9,601 + 2× × 10−
𝐷 𝑇̅ 0,395 0,9796
≈ 0,242 × 10− (𝑘𝑔 ⋅ 𝑚 )
- So, the moment of inertia of the steel rod is:
