Linear functions in one variable. The slope and the intercept. Secant and tangent
lines.
Graphs of functions in 1 variable. The distinction between graphs and curves.
Graphs of functions in 2 variables. The distinction between graphs and surfaces.
Contour diagrams and cross sections for functions of 2 variables.
Linear functions of two variables. Their equation in terms of x- and y-slopes.
Finding equation of the plane passing through 3 given points in 3d.
Equations of main surfaces in 3d: spheres, cones, cylinders, paraboloids.
Displacement vectors, their direction and magnitude. Parallel vectors. Position
vectors. Unit vectors. Velocity, acceleration, force, and work as vectors.
The dot product, its algebraic and geometric definitions. Angle between vectors in
terms of the dot product. Perpendicularity. Equation of a plane passing through a
point (x0 , y0 , z0 ) when its normal vector is given. Resolving a vector into components
parallel and orthogonal to another vector (orthogonal projection).
The cross product, its algebraic and geometric definitions. Area of a parallelogram
and volume of a parallelepiped using cross-products.
Double integrals. Reduction of double integrals to iterated integrals for rectangular
and non-rectangular regions. Double integral as volume. Double integral as area.
Double integral as mass.
Triple integrals. Reduction of triple integrals to iterated integrals for solid paral-
lelepipeds and other shapes.
Polar coordinates. Double integral in polar coordinates. Jacobian of the transfor-
mation from cartesian to polar coordinates.
Cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Triple integral in cylindrical and spherical
coordinates. Jacobians of the transformations from cartesian to cylindrical and
spherical coordinates.
Trigonometric identities for sin2 x, cos2 x, and sin 2x.
Linear approximation of a differentiable function. Tangent line to a given function
f (x). Partial derivatives. Tangent plane to a surface z = f (x, y). Gradients and
directional derivatives. What does the gradient of a function tell us? Tangent

Parameterized curves. Parametric equation of a circle. Parametric equation of a
line. Velocity vector. The acceleration vector. The length of a curve and of a
graph.

Differential equations for the flow of a vector field.
Line integrals. Oriented curves. Work done by a force. Line integrals as work.
Reduction of line integrals to ordinary integrals.
Potential function of a gradient vector field. Fundamental theorem of Calculus for
line integrals. Gradient vector fields and path independence. Constructing the
potential function of a given vector field, method of differential equations. The
curl test in the plane for a gradient vector field.
Green’s theorem. Calculating the area using Green’s theorem.
