Job Number: 02
Job Name: Design of a Single Reinforced beam in USD and comparison.

Problem:
Design the mid beam as shown in Figure-01. Consider it as simply supported. Follow the
following information as design aid:
Slab thickness = 6"
Live load = 100 psf
Floor finish = 30 psf

Design this beam

Wall thickness over the beam = 5"
Story height = 10'
f c' = 3000 psi, f y = 60000 psi, and n = 8.
Steps:
1. Identify the UDL over the beam
Figure: 01
2. Design the beam in USD
3. Comparison and comment.

Beam Section Identification:

Consider: h = d + 2

As the beam has one span and subjected to UDL, so the Mid Span Moment will be maximum.

1 = 0.85 for f c' between 2500 to 4000 psi. For f c' above 4000 psi 1 should be reduced
linearly at a rate of 0.05 for each 1000 psi. But 1 shall not be taken as less than 0.65.
f c' − 4000
 1 = 0.85 − 0.05 and 0.65   1  0.85

For f c' = 3000 1 = 0.85

 b = 0.851
f y 87000+ f y
Now,  max = 0.75 b
f c' 87000

f y 87000 + f y
Or,  max = 0.016

M = max f y bd 2 (1 − 0.59 )

Or, 836 + 4.22d = 0.9  0.016  60  10  d 2 (1 − 0.59 )

Or, 7.01  d 2 - 4.22d - 836 = 0
