Introduction
•Structural analysis is the prediction of the performance of a structure under;
1. Loads
2. Support movements
3. Temperature changes
•The performance characteristics:
1. Stresses such as axial forces, shear forces, and bending moments
2. Deflections
3. Support reactions

1.1 Historical Background
✓Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) is originator of the theory of structures.
✓In his book entitled Two New Sciences, which was published in 1638.
✓Galileo analyzed the failure of some simple structures, including cantilever
beams.
✓Engineers applying the knowledge of mechanics (mathematics and science) in
designing structures.
✓Earlier engineering structures were designed by trial and error.

1.4 Analytical Modal
•An analytical model is a simplified representation, of a structure.
•Steps for analytical modal;
1. Plane Versus Space Structure
2. Line Diagram
3. Connections
4. Supports

1.4 Analytical Modal
1. Plane Versus Space Structure:
•If all the members of a structure as well as the applied loads lie in a single
plane, the structure is called a plane structure.
•Actual three-dimensional structural systems can be subdivided into plane
structures for the purpose of analysis.
•Some structures due to their shape, arrangement of members, or applied
loading Not subdivided into planar components. Such structures, called space
structures.

1.4 Analytical Modal
•Space structures analyzed as three-dimensional bodies subjected to three-
dimensional force systems.
•Such as domes, aerospace structures, and transmission towers.

2. Line Diagram:
•The analytical model of the two- or three-dimensional body selected for
analysis is represented by a line diagram.
•The dimensions of the members and the size of the connections are not shown
on the diagram.

•Two types of connections are commonly used to join members of structures:
i. Rigid connections
ii. Flexible, or hinged, connections.
