HowFrogWenttoHeaven

NARRATOR1: Therewasoncea young man named Kimana. Hewanted tomarry


the SkyMaiden. Hewrotea letter toherfather,the Sun Chief.

KIMANA: “ I,Kimana,a man ofearth,wish to marrythe


Sky Maiden,your daughter.”

NARRATOR4: Kimana went to Rabbit.

KIMANA: Will you takethis letter?

NARRATOR4: Rabbit said,

RABBIT: Icannot go to Heaven.

NARRATOR2: Kimana went to Antelope.

KIMANA: Will you takethis letter?

NARRATOR2: Antelopesaid,

ANTELOPE: Icannot gotoHeaven.

NARRATOR5: Kimana went to Hawk.

KIMANA: Will you takethis letter?

NARRATOR5: Hawk said,

HAWK: Ican gohalfway. But Icannot gotoHeaven.

NARRATOR3: Then Frog cameto Kimana.

FROG: Why doyounot takethe letter yourself?

NARRATOR3: Kimana said,


KIMANA: ThisI cannotdo.

FROG: Then Iwill takeit for you.

NARRATOR3: Kimana laughed.

KIMANA: Cana frog take aletter toHeaven?

FROG: Whateverit is,Ican doit. But onlyifI try.

NARRATOR1: Now,Frog lived by a well. Everyday,thegirlswhoserved theSun


Chief cametothiswell. They climbed downfrom Heaven on a web madebySpider.
Then they filled their water jugs and went home.

NARRATOR4: Frog put the letterin hismouth and hid in the well. Thegirls from
Heavencamefor water,singing their song.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.

NARRATOR2: They lowered their jugsinto thewell,and Frog jumped into one. The
girlsdid not see.

NARRATOR5: Then thegirls climbed back up the web of Spider. They went intothe
houseof theSun Chiefand left the jugs in a room.

NARRATOR3: Frog was alone. Hejumped out of thejug and spittheletter out on a
bench.

FROG:

NARRATOR3: Then hehid in acorner.

NARRATOR1: TheSunChiefcamefor adrink ofwater. Hesaw the letter and


opened it. Heread,

SUN CHIEF: “ I, Kimana,a man of earth,wish tomarry theSkyMaiden,your


daughter.”
NARRATOR1: TheSunChiefsaid,

SUN CHIEF: How can this be?

NARRATOR4: Hewent to thegirls whofetched water.

SUN CHIEF: Did you bring this letter?

NARRATOR4: Thegirls said,

GIRLS: We did not.

NARRATOR2: Hewent to hiswife,the Moon Lady,and read it to her.

SUN CHIEF: What should wedo?

NARRATOR2: TheMoon Lady said,

MOON LADY: Don’ t ask me! Ask your daughter!

NARRATOR5: Hewent to hisdaughter. TheSkyMaiden said,

SKY MAIDEN: Let usseeifhecanbring awedding gift.

NARRATOR3: SotheSunChiefwrotea letterand setit on thebench. Then hewent


away.

NARRATOR1: Frog came out and puttheletter in his mouth. Then heclimbed into
anempty jug.

NARRATOR4: Thenext day,the girls took thejugs and climbed down to earth,
singing their song.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.

NARRATOR2: They lowered their jugsinto thewell,and Frog jumped out.

NARRATOR5: Then thegirls wentback toHeaven.


NARRATOR3: Frog took the lettertoKimana,and Kimana read it.

KIMANA: “ You maymarrymy daughter if you bring a purseof money.”

NARRATOR3: Kimana said,

KIMANA: ThisI cannotdo.

FROG: Then Iwill bring it for you.

NARRATOR3: Kimana laughed.

KIMANA: You took aletter toHeaven. But can youbring apurse ofmoney?

FROG: Whateverit is,Ican doit. But onlyifI try.

NARRATOR1: Kimana gaveFrog a purseofmoney. Frog tookhold ofit with his


mouthand carried it tothe well. Heclimbed in and waited.

NARRATOR4: Thegirls fromHeaven came to thewell.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.

NARRATOR2: Frog got into one ofthejugs.

NARRATOR5: Thegirls returned toHeaven and left himin theroom.

NARRATOR3: Frog set the money on the bench. Then hehid.

NARRATOR1: TheSunChiefcameand found thepurse.

SUN CHIEF: How can this be?

NARRATOR4: Hewent to thegirls.

SUN CHIEF: Did you bring thismoney?

GIRLS: We did not.


NARRATOR2: Hewent to hiswife. TheMoon Ladysaid,

MOON LADY: Don’ t ask me! Ask your daughter!

NARRATOR5: Hewent to hisdaughter. TheSkyMaiden said,

SKY MAIDEN: Let usseeifhecancomefetch me.

NARRATOR3: SotheSunChiefwrotea letterand left it on thebench.

NARRATOR1: Frog put the letterin hismouth.

NARRATOR4: Heclimbed intoan empty jug.

NARRATOR2: Thenext day,the girls carried himtoearth.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.

NARRATOR5: Hejumped back intothewell,and thegirls wentback toHeaven.

NARRATOR3: Frog brought theletter to Kimana,and Kimana read it.

KIMANA: “ You may marrymydaughter if you come and fetch her.”

NARRATOR3: Kimana said,

KIMANA: ThisI cannotdo.

FROG: Then Iwill fetch her for you.

NARRATOR3: Kimana laughed.

KIMANA: You took aletter toHeaven. You brought apurse ofmoney. But
canyou fetch abride?

FROG: Whateverit is,Ican doit. But onlyifI try.

NARRATOR1: Frog climbed back intothewell.


NARRATOR4: Thegirls camewith their jugs.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.

NARRATOR2: They carried himtoHeaven.

NARRATOR5: Frog jumped out. He spit in all thejugs ofwater.

FROG:

NARRATOR3: Then hehid in an empty jug.

NARRATOR1: Thepeople ofthe house cameand drank thewater.

NARRATOR4: They all got sick.

SUN CHIEF,MOON LADY,SKY MAIDEN,GIRLS,OTHER SKY PEOPLE:

NARRATOR2: TheSunChiefcalled forthespirit doctor. Thedoctortold him,

DOCTOR: You promised your daughter to a man of earth,but shehas not gone. He
has sent an evil spirit with asickness. Theevilspirit is in the shape of. . . a frog!

NARRATOR5: TheSunChiefwent to his wife. TheMoon Lady said,

MOON LADY: Don’ t ask me! Ask your daughter!

NARRATOR3: Hewent to hisdaughter. TheSkyMaiden said,

SKY MAIDEN: Iwill go.

NARRATOR1: Thenext day,the SkyMaiden went with the girls down tothe well.

GIRLS:

Good daytoyou, mysister.


Good daytoyou.
NARRATOR4: Thegirls filled their jugs,and Frog jumped out. Then thegirls leftthe
Sky Maiden and went home.

NARRATOR2: Frog jumped outofthewell.

FROG: Iwill lead you to your husband.

NARRATOR2: TheSkyMaidenlaughed.

SKY MAIDEN: Can a frog lead a woman?

FROG: Itook a letter toHeaven. Ibrought a purseof money. Ifetched a bride.


Whateverit was,Icould doit. But only since Itried.

SKY MAIDEN: Then it is you Iwill marry!

NARRATOR5: Shetook Frog back toHeaven and married him.

NARRATOR3: They lived on and on.

NARRATOR1: And Kimana is still waiting for his bride.
