Aite - Corsci 01 - Module 1
ACTIVITY 1:
Direction: Write the letter of the correct answer on the line provided before each number.
INTRODUCTION:
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbour life. Our planet has a molten nickel-iron core which gave
rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun. In
this module, you will understand why this planet is called the “living planet.”
I. DISCUSSION:
Jovian planets
are larger, further from the Sun and formed from gases around a solid metal and hydrogen core. They have primary
atmospheres, many moons and a faster spin.
Earth
t is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life.
It has a molten nickel-iron core which gave rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere,
shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun.
1. Atmosphere
It contains gases that are essential for sustaining life
Oxygen - constantly replenished into the atmosphere by plants.
Carbon dioxide - which helps to moderate the planet's temperature. It is also used by plants during photosynthesis to
produce glucose.
Nitrogen - is an important part of DNA that carries genetic instructions, and likewise, it is also found in amino acids, the
building blocks of proteins.
2. Plate Tectonics
provides long-term regulation of a planet's heat and chemical budgets
helps maintain a magnetic field that protects the surface from harmful solar radiation
3. Energy
Without energy, the processes of life would not happen.
The main source of Earth's energy is the Sun.
Sunlight helps plants produce nutrients through photosynthesis.
4. Water
the most important ingredient for most cellular processes, such as the metabolism of sugar and protein synthesis.
an effective solvent
When water freezes, it floats in water. Ice can insulate the underlying liquid preventing the water underneath from
freezing further.
Earth Subsystems
1. Atmosphere
It is a thin layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.
78% nitrogen,
21% oxygen,
0.9% argon,
0.03% carbon dioxide, and
trace amounts of other gases.
This thin gaseous layer insulates the Earth from extreme temperatures;
It keeps heat inside the atmosphere
It also blocks the Earth from much of the Sun's incoming ultraviolet radiation.
2. Biosphere
It is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists.
It extends from the deepest root systems of trees, to the dark environment of ocean trenches, to lush rain forests and
high mountaintops.
3. Lithosphere
It is the solid, outer part of the Earth.
It includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust, the outermost layers of Earth's structure.
It is bounded by the atmosphere above and the asthenosphere (another part of the upper mantle) below.
4. Hydrosphere
Comprises the Earth's liquid water.
Covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many plants and animals.
It can be divided into two groups: fresh water and salt water.
Fresh water involves spring, river and lake
Salt water includes ocean and sea.
II. PRACTICE/APPLICATION/SYNTHESIS: See activity no. 1 and answer worksheet no. 1-2
III. ASSESSMENT: See activity no. 2 and answer worksheet no. 1-2
