S11/12ES-Ia-e4
VII. OBJECTIVE/S:
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:
 identify the characteristics of the Earth that supports life;

INTRODUCTION:
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbour life. Our planet has a molten nickel-iron core which gave
rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun. In
this module, you will understand why this planet is called the “living planet.”

I. DISCUSSION:

Lesson 1: UNIVERSE AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE
Non-scientific Thought
 Ancient Egyptians believed in many gods and myths which narrate that the world arose from an infinite sea at the first
rising of the sun.
 In India, there is the narrative that gods sacrificed Purusha, the primal man whose head, feet, eyes, and mind became
the sky, earth, sun, and moon respectively.
 The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam claim that a supreme being created the universe,
including man and other living organisms.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Overview About The Solar System

 The solar system is located in the Milky Way galaxy a huge disc- and spiral-shaped aggregation of about at least 100
billion stars and other bodies;
 Its spiral arms rotate around a globular cluster or bulge of many, many stars, at the center of which lies a
supermassive blackhole
 This galaxy is about 100 million light years across (1 light year = 9.4607 × 1012 km;
 The solar system revolves around the galactic center once in about 240 million years;
 The Milky Way is part of the so-called Local Group of galaxies, which in turn is part of the Virgo supercluster of
galaxies

Two types of planet in our Solar System

Terrestrial planets
 are smaller, closer to the Sun and formed from rock around a molten metal core. They have secondary atmospheres,
fewer moons, and a slower spin.

Jovian planets
 are larger, further from the Sun and formed from gases around a solid metal and hydrogen core. They have primary
atmospheres, many moons and a faster spin.

LESSON 2: EARTH AND EARTH SUBSYSTEMS

Earth
 t is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life.
 It has a molten nickel-iron core which gave rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere,
shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun.

The Earth That Supports Life

1. Atmosphere
 It contains gases that are essential for sustaining life
 Oxygen - constantly replenished into the atmosphere by plants.
 Carbon dioxide - which helps to moderate the planet's temperature. It is also used by plants during photosynthesis to
produce glucose.
 Nitrogen - is an important part of DNA that carries genetic instructions, and likewise, it is also found in amino acids, the
building blocks of proteins.
2. Plate Tectonics
 provides long-term regulation of a planet's heat and chemical budgets
 helps maintain a magnetic field that protects the surface from harmful solar radiation
3. Energy
 Without energy, the processes of life would not happen.
 The main source of Earth's energy is the Sun.
 Sunlight helps plants produce nutrients through photosynthesis.
4. Water
 the most important ingredient for most cellular processes, such as the metabolism of sugar and protein synthesis.
 an effective solvent
 When water freezes, it floats in water. Ice can insulate the underlying liquid preventing the water underneath from
freezing further.

Earth Subsystems
1. Atmosphere
 It is a thin layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.
 78% nitrogen,
 21% oxygen,
 0.9% argon,
 0.03% carbon dioxide, and
 trace amounts of other gases.
 This thin gaseous layer insulates the Earth from extreme temperatures;
 It keeps heat inside the atmosphere
 It also blocks the Earth from much of the Sun's incoming ultraviolet radiation.
2. Biosphere
 It is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists.
 It extends from the deepest root systems of trees, to the dark environment of ocean trenches, to lush rain forests and
high mountaintops.
3. Lithosphere
 It is the solid, outer part of the Earth.
 It includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust, the outermost layers of Earth's structure.
 It is bounded by the atmosphere above and the asthenosphere (another part of the upper mantle) below.
4. Hydrosphere
 Comprises the Earth's liquid water.
 Covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many plants and animals.
 It can be divided into two groups: fresh water and salt water.
 Fresh water involves spring, river and lake
 Salt water includes ocean and sea.
