UNIT-I STRESS, STRAIN AND DEFORMATION OF SOLIDS

1. The bar shown in figure is subjected to a tensile load of 160 KN. If the stress in the middle portion is limited to 150 N/mm2,
determine the diameter of the middle portion. Find also the length of the middle portion if the total elongation of the bar is to be
0.2 mm. Young’s modulus is given as equal to 2.1 × 105 N/mm2. A/M 2021

2. For the compound bar shown in figure. Calculate the stress in each segment if the temperature increases by 50°C. Assume for the
aluminum segment: Area = 400mm2, Young’s modulus = 70 GPa, Co-efficient of thermal expansion= 23x10-6/°C and for steel
segment: Area =100mm2, Young’s modulus = 210 GPa, Co-efficient of thermal expansion = 12.4 x 10-6/°C. N/D 2021

3. i) Derive the relationship between Young’s modulus and bulk modulus. N/D 2022
ii) A metallic rod of diameter 10mm, when tested under an axial pill of 10 KN was found to reduce its diameter by 0.003mm. The
modulus of rigidity for the material of the rod is 51 GPa. Find the Poisson’s ratio, modulus of elasticity and bulk modulus. A/M

4. At a certain point in a strained material, the intensities of stresses on two planes at right angles to each other are 20 N/mm2 and 10
N/mm2 both tensile. They are accompanied by a shear stress of magnitude 10 N/mm2. Find the location of principal plane and

5. A point in a strained material is subjected to stresses as shown in figure. Using Mohr’s circle method, determine the normal and
tangential stresses across the oblique plane. Also verify the normal and tangential stresses analytically. N/D 2019

UNIT- II TRANSVERSE LOADING ON BEAMS AND STRESSES IN BEAM


1. A beam of length 12m simply supported at its ends carries three concentrated loads of 6kN, 5kN and 7kN at the distances of
4m, 7m and 10m respectively from the left support. Also an uniformly distributed load of 2kN/m acts for 2m length from left
support and 3kN/m uniformly distributed load acts for 3m length form right support. Draw the Shear force and bending moment
diagrams. N/D 2022
2. A SSB of length 10m carries the uniformly distributed load and two point loads as shown in figure. Draw shear force and
bending moment diagram for the beam. And also calculate the maximum bending moment.

3. A cantilever 1.5 m long is loaded with a UDL of 2 kN/m run over a length of 1.25 m from the free end. It also carries a point
load of 3 kN at a distance of 0.25m from the free end. Draw the Shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever.

5. An I section beam 350mm x 150mm has a web thickness of 10mm and a flange thickness of 20mm. if the Shear force acting on
the section is 40kN , find the maximum shear stress developed in the I section. Also sketch the shear stress distribution across

UNIT- III TORSION


1. A solid cylindrical shaft is to transmit 300kW power at 100rpm. If the shear stresses not to exceed 60 N/mm2, find its diameter.
What percent saving in weight would be obtained if this shaft is replaced by a hollow one whose internal diameter equals to 0.6
times the external diameter, when the length, material and maximum shear stress being the same? N/D 2022
2. A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/5 is required to transmit 400kW at 120rpm, the maximum torque being 30% greater than the
mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 50Mpa and the twist in a length of 4m is not to exceed 1.6°. Calculate the minimum
external diameter satisfying these conditions. Take shear modulus as 80Gpa. A/M 2022
3. A hollow shaft of external diameter 120 mm transmits 300 kW power at 200 rpm. Determine the maximum internal diameter if
the maximum stress in the shaft is not to exceed 60 N/mm2. A/M 2021
4. Two shafts of the same material and of same lengths are subjected to the same torque, if the shaft is of a solid circular section and
second shaft is of hollow circular section, whose internal diameter is 2/3 of the outside diameter and the maximum shear stress
developed in each shaft is the same, compare the weight of the shafts. A/M 2019
5. Determine the maximum shear stress and elongation in a helical steel spring composed of 15 turns of 16 mm diameter wire on a
mean radius of 80 mm, when the spring is supporting a load of 1.4 KN. Take rigidity modulus as 80GPa. N/D 2022
UNIT- IV DEFLECTION OF BEAMS
1. A simply supported beam of span 6m and uniform rectangular cross section 150mm wide and 300mm deep is subjected to an UDL
load of 2kN/m over the entire span and a point load of 3kN at 4m from the left support. Find the maximum slope and deflection of
the beam. E = 2 X 105 N/mm2. N/D 2022
2. A simply supported beam of span 4m supported at A and B has C as the middle point. It is subjected to uniformly distributed load
of 10kN/m on the portion AC. Find the maximum deflection in terms of EI. A/M 2022
3. A cantilever beam of 8m long carries a load of 100kN ata distance of 3m from the free end, and a load of 50kN at a distance of 3m
from the fixed end. Calculate the deflection and slope at 5m from the fixed end. Assume E = 70GPa and moment of inertia =
10x107 mm4. N/D 2021
4. A simply supported beam of length 4 m carries a point load of 3 kN at a distance of 1 m from each end. If E = 2 × 105
N/mm2 and I = 108 mm4 for the beam, then using conjugate beam method determine: i) slope at each end and under each load. ii)
Deflection under each load and at the centre. A/M 2021
5. A beam of length l is supported at the free ends and carries a concentrated load ‘w’ at a distances ‘a’ from each end. Find using
conjugate beam method the slope at each end and under each load. Find also the deflection under each load and at the centre. N/D

UNIT- V THIN CYLINDERS, SPHERES AND THICK CYLINDERS


1. Derive expression for change in length, change in diameter and change in volume of a thin cylindrical shell subjected to an
internal pressure. N/D 2022
2. A cylindrical shell 3.25m long, 1m in diameter is subjected to an internal pressure of 1MPa. If the thickness of the shell is
10mm, find the circumferential and longitudinal stresses. Also, find the maximum shear stress and changes in dimensions of the
shell. Take modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio as 200Gpa and 0.3 respectively. A/M 2022
3. A thin cylindrical shell having 800mm outside diameter and 10mm thickness and length 2m is subjected to an internal pressure
of 2Mpa, calculate i) the hoop stress and longitudinal stresses developed, ii) maximum shear stress, iii) the changes in diameter,
length and volume. Assume E = 210Gpa and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3. N/D 21
4. Calculate the maximum and minimum hoop stress across the cross section of a pipe having 500mm internal diameter and
120mm thick. Assume that the pipe contains a fluid at a pressure of 10N/mm2. Sketch the radial pressure and hoop stress
distribution across the cross section. N/D 2021
5. A cylindrical shell 3 m long which is closed as the ends an internal diameter of one metre and a wall thickness of 15 mm.
Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stresses induced and also changes in the dimensions of the shell, if it is subjected
to an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm2 and m = 0.3. A/M 2021
