6 (a) Deduce the relation between the Modulus of Elasticity and Modulus of (5) 1 2
Rigidity from fundamentals.
(b) A bar 30mm in diameter was subjected to a tensile load of 60kN and the (5) 1 3
measured extension on the 300mm gauge length was 0.112mm and
change in diameter was 0.0036mm. Calculate Poisson’s ratio and three
elastic constants.
(OR)
7 (a) State Hooke’s law and define Poisson’s Ratio. (5) 1 2
(b) A copper rod 2cm in diameter is surrounded by a steel tube of 3cm (5) 1 4
external diameter and 2.5 cm internal diameter. The rod and tube are of
same length and their ends are rigidly fixed. If the tube and rod are at
200C, calculate the stress in each material, when the temperature is
raised to 1200C. Take Es = 200kN/mm2, Ec = 100kN/mm2,
αS = 12x10-6 /oC, αC = 18x10-6 /oC.

8 (a) Draw the SFD for a cantilever carrying Uniformly Varying Load on the (5) 2 2
whole span with maximum intensity at the fixed end.
(b) A cantilever beam of length 2m carries an uniformly distributed load of (5) 2 4
3kN/m over a length of1.5m from its fixed end. Draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams.
(OR)
9 (a) Derive the relation between SF, BM and rate of loading. (5) 2 2
(b) A simply supported beam of span 10 m carries point loads 6 kN each at (5) 2 3
distance of 3 m and 5 m from left support. Draw the S.F and B.M
diagrams for the beam.

10 (a) State the assumptions made in deriving bending equation. (5) 3 2
(b) A timber cantilever 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep is 3 m long. It is (5) 3 4
loaded with a U.D.L of 3kN/m over the entire length. A point load of
2.7 kN is placed at the free end of the cantilever. Find the maximum
bending stress produced.
(OR)
11 (a) A beam of T- section of flange 180 mm x 10 mm and centrally placed (5) 3 2
web of 10mm x 200mm is subjected to a shear force of 300 kN at a
section. Draw the shear stress distribution diagram.
(b) Sketch the bending stress distribution across the cross section of a (5) 3 2
rectangular beam section 230 × 400 mm subjected to 60 kN-m moment.

12 (a) Explain the procedure for drawing Mohr’s circle when the axial stresses (5) 4 2
in two mutually perpendicular directions (𝜎𝑥 , 𝜎𝑦 ) and the shear stress
(𝜏𝑥𝑦 ) at a point are given. Also, show the principal stresses on Mohr’s
circle.
(b) At a point in the web of a girder the bending stress is 60 N/mm2 tensile (5) 4 4
and the shearing stress at the same point is 30 N/mm2. Determine the
principal stresses and principal planes.
(OR)
13 (a) Derive the expression for core of a solid circular section of diameter D. (5) 4 2
(b) A hollow circular section having external diameter 300mm and internal (5) 4 3
diameter 250mm carries a load of 100kN at an eccentricity of 125mm
