For a relation between compressor flow rate and pressure characteristic, a maximum pressure
point appears on the lower load side than that at the design point. A further decrease in flow rate
would lead to a decline of pressure curves to the left.
As a result, the compressor will be operated unstable, with gas flow and pressure fluctuating.
This point is called the surging point, the larger flow side of which may be deemed as a range of
safe operations and the smaller flow side as a range of unsafe operations. Should such a
surging phenomenon take place the flow rate will deviate in a great measure, the discharge
pressure will vibrate and noise vibration will be caused. In the worst case, it might result in
damage to the machine. A large surge, moreover, would cause a reverse flow of the discharge
gas while the discharge gas temperature would rapidly rise, with the discharge gas recompressed.
To get rid of a surge, the suction flow rate is increased while keeping the speed constant or the
speed is decreased while keeping the suction flow rate constant.
Sudden change of operating and process gas condition shall be avoided. Because compressor
system might be damaged due to the surge and/or choke phenomena that would be caused by
sudden change of operating and process gas condition.

Quantity of oil injection
Valves of cooling water for process gas cooler must be locked open in order
to prevent the Compressor from being over design temperature.
The cooling water should be injected from each return bend to prevent fouling by reducing the
discharge temperature for each section. However, the excessive injection more than saturate will
be harmful condition.
Therefore, the quantity of water injection shall be complied with the specified value shown on
WATER INJECTION P & I DIAGRAM.

1 Operating Procedure
This document will list the points to be checked for on site operation of the Compressor.
To safely operate the compressors, check each item shown as follows at each occasion of
operation, at the very minimum.
IMPORTANT
Perform correct operating procedure of the Compressor.
Incorrect operating procedure can burn rotor shaft, and damage the
Compressor.

NOTE
• Purge casing with N 2 or with service gas, if necessary.
1 Install filters for buffer gas supply line and separation gas supply line.
NOTE
• Use the heater to raise the temperature if it is below 33°C (VG32) / 42°C (VG46).
15 Check LO pressure.
NOTE
• 1.3 kg/cm2G LO pressure must be kept at close point to the machine as
minimum. (Normal 1.4 kg/cm2G)
16 Check LO temperature.
The following are required.
• 33°C (VG32) / 42°C (VG46) for start at LO cooler outlet.
(21°C (VG32) / 29°C (VG46) are permitted for turning operation.)
• Pass cooling water through oil cooler.
17 Fully open all manual valves of buffer gas supply line and PDCV (without by-pass valve).

Depressurize when there is the possibility of excessive torque (overload)

For refrigerant compressor, cool down rate of suction gas temperature should be less than
2.0 deg.C / min.

1 For a short-term shutdown, compressor will resume operation more quickly if the seal
remains active and gas sealed.
2 For a long-term shutdown or if the seal is opened, fully open the drain valve in the casing.
1 Stop LO pumps.
1-6 Restart-up
IMPORTANT
For the large horizontal (axial) split casing ( > 9H model) or stainless labyrinth
seal applications, high vibration on compressor during restart up may be
caused by temporary bending of the casing due to unequal distribution of
casing temperature after shutdown.
In that case, wait several hours (or perform cooling operation at warming up
speed) until the difference of casing surface temperature between upper and
bottom is less than 5 deg.C before restart-up.
1-7 Periodical Inspection
For proper operations of the compressor, it is important to check that all parts are properly working
within the allowable setting values. For this purpose, it is recommended to conduct periodically
check in accordance with the following descriptions.
Following data should be inspected and checked periodically.
Daily inspection items for local instruments. (at least once a day)
Bearing condition
Lubricant oil pressure In operating range
Lubricant oil temperature In operating range
Lubricant oil flow (through sight glass) Normal level
Lubricant oil drain temperature In operating range

1. Recommendation of Lubricant
1-1 Purpose
Do NOT use any low quality oils containing grit, inorganic acid, metal soaps,
asphaltene, pitch, resinous substances, etc. MCO will not be liable for any
machine troubles such as bearing damage due to use of low quality oils.
The oil must be refined mineral oil or synthetic oil of the highest quality and uniformity. It must
contain no grit, inorganic acid, metal soaps, asphaltene, pitch, resinous substances, or any other
substance which will interfere with the lubricating properties of the oil, or that have detrimental
influence to the oil and the metals during operation.
Recommended physical and chemical properties for the new oil are shown on Table-1.
When the quality of turbine oil becomes old, oxide deposition is generated. It grows up to the
objects called sludge. Sludge may cause unstable condition of bearing, oil film seal and
mechanical seal applications. In order to check anti-sludge formation quality of the oil, MCO
specified a sludge formation test (dry-TOST @ 120 °C). This test method is based on TOST:
Turbine oil Oxidation Stability Test. The details of modified test conditions are shown in the after
mentioned section dry-TOST Test Method.
Properties of oils, even for the same brand, are changed by oil manufacturer
without any notification to users. Furthermore, even for the same brand oil,
oil properties are different due to the difference of base oil, manufacturing
country etc. Therefore oil properties should be checked periodically if it is
satisfied with the recommendations.

Lubricant condition must be monitored for reliable operation. ASTM D4378 and IEC 962 provide
guidance for selecting and testing schedules.
Strictly observe the descriptions in this section. Use of oils exceeding the use
limits may cause machine troubles such as bearing damage, for which MCO
will not be liable at all.
The viscosity limits are provided in ASTM D4378 and IEC 962 as a guideline.
Acid number is an indication of the lubricant condition. With oxidation the acid number increases.
Change the oil when an acid number increase by 0.4 mg KOH/g from the original value.
The remaining oxidation life of the oil can be measured by ASTM D2272, IP 229, and Oxidation
Stability of Rotating Pressure Vessel (RPVOT). The RPVOT values and limits vary with the various
oil formulations. With a RPVOT of 25% of the oil’s initial value; however, its life is expired.
Particulate matter in lube oil could be contamination, wear debris or oil oxidation (referred to as
sludge). Filters in the lube system, if properly installed and maintained, will remove most
particulates in the mesh size range. However, the very fine particulate will pass through the filters
and continue to be in circulation. Monitor the oil condition for abrupt increases in particulates in the
oil and characterize the nature of these particulates. Control the sludge from oil oxidation around
100 mg/kg by filtration or other oil conditioning processes. Change the oil when sludge formation
from oil oxidation shows a sustained increase above 100 mg/kg before reaching RPVOT of 25% of
the original value.

Do NOT use mixed oil of plural brands, even though they are the same
manufacturer’s oil. MCO will not be liable for any machine troubles such as
bearing damage due to use of mixed oils.
※ As for the flushing oil, MCO recommends to apply the same oil with working oil.
Different brand oils should not be mixed basically, even though they are the same manufacturer’s
oil. When customer will change oil brand, replacement work should be carried out in accordance
with following procedure.
(1) Old oil that remains in all lube oil line should be drained out completely.
In particular, the oil should be carefully drained out from oil coolers, oil filters and the bottom of
oil pipes where the oil may remain.
(2) Open manhole on the top of the oil tank and clean up the inside of the tank with a piece of
sponge or deerskin. After completion, close the manhole and shut all valves off.
(3) Fill oil tank with new oil, as flushing oil, to keep at or above the minimum operating oil level
during operation of the oil pump with both oil coolers and oil filters full of oil.
(4) Start oil pumps and circulate new oil for minimum 3 hours.
For detail procedure of the oil flushing, field erection/installation manual to be referred.
(5) Flushing oil should be drained completely.
In particular, the oil should be carefully drained out from oil coolers, oil filters and the bottom of
oil pipes where the oil may remain.
(6) Fill oil tank with new oil up to maximum level in order to keep normal level during operation.

Wear protective gloves and glasses when handling sample oils. Otherwise,
burn and injury to eyes and hands may result.
MCO specify waterless TOST, that is dry –TOST, test method in order to evaluate in a short time the
sludge formation from turbine oils that have high RPVOT life.
The dry-TOST conforms to TOST (ASTM D943) and is conducted at temperatures of 120°C.
The test method is as follows.
(1) Prepare several test tubes for a sample of oil.
(2) Follow the test method shown in Table-3 below. Complete the test at different times for each
test tube.

(3) Leave the test tubes one night at room temperature and then measure the RPVOT values and
sludge. The RPVOT has to be measured by ASTM D2272. The residual ratio (%) of RPVOT is
obtained by dividing measured value by RPVOT value of new oil. The sludge amount equals
to the amount of filter residues that 100g of oil is filtered through 1 µm Millipore filter
(JAWP04700 or equivalent.).
(4) Draw a diagram as shown in Figure-1. The oil is passed when the amount of sludge is at
100mg/kg or below at 25% of RPVOT residual ratio and failed when it is above 100mg/kg.
