Highway Engineering _II | Group Assignment No-2

1) A 6KMroad construction from X-Y has been designed with total excavation (Cut) of
Volume15,660 m3 and Fill (Embankment) of 13900 m3. Samples of soil are taken from the
representative of all cut section to check whether the excavated material can be used for
the embankment in fill section. The results for each of the cut sections are given in table.
Based on the test’s result data and Volume from each fill and cut section determine the
followings:
A. Cut to spoil Volume,
B. cut to fill Volume
C. Borrow to fill volume
Assumption:
 Blending property is not determined, and hence the material can be used purely without
blending with any material.
 No limitation to Free Hauling distance. Any suitable material can be used at any fill
section without any additional cost due to hauling.
 No shrinkage and Swelling facto to be considered.
 CBR>15 for all cut section

2)A natural gravel source located near the road project is proposed to be used for base
construction. A sample from this proposed borrow site were taken to the laboratory and
evaluation for some quality control was carried out as below.
A.S ieve Analysis: A total mass of 3000gm was sieved and the retained on each

o Show weather the aggregate is well, poor, gap or uniform graded,
o ACV value,
o Would you use the site for base construction? Why? (Use ERA 2002

3) For a road network construction of Addis Ababa Science and technology University, the
asphalt binder of AC 60-70 was recommended to be used for wearing course construction.
If you assigned as a pavement engineer on this road network project, what type of test will
you order to check the quality of the recommended asphalt Binder? Describe the application
of each tests with its limit of acceptance.
4) From the available asphalt cement types (AC 40-50, AC 60-70, AC 85-100) which one will
you select for road project constructed in SAMARA and DEBARK respectively?
Describe your reason of recommendation.
5) Why does the air content of 4% is set to be one of the criterion in selecting the optimum
asphalt content in Asphalt Concrete mix design?
6) The following table shows the particle size distributions of three aggregates A, B and C
which are to be blended to produce an acceptable aggregate for use in manufacturing an
asphalt concrete for highway pavement construction. If the required limits of particle size
distribution for the mix are as shown in the table below,
A. determine a suitable ratio for blending aggregates A B and C to obtain an acceptable
combined aggregate.
B. Determine the bulk specific gravity of the aggregate mix:

7) for the aggregate mix of question # 6 above, if the effective specific gravity of the
aggregate is 2.82 and the specific gravity of the asphalt is 1.02. Assume any missed data
reasonably.
A. Determine the optimum asphalt content as a percentage of the total mix if results
obtained using the Marshall method are shown in the following table.
B. Determine the asphalt absorption of the optimum mix.

8)F or the following subgrade material properties identify which stabilizing agents is
