(Compulsory Question)
1. Answer the following 10x02= 20 Marks
a) Why the center of Newton’s rings pattern is always dark? 2M
b) Define diffraction. 2M
c) Define Unit Cell 2M
d) Define Bragg’s law. 2M
e) Define Electric dipole moment. 2M
f) Write the relationship between relative permeability and magnetic susceptibility. 2M
g) What are the properties of de-Broglie wave? 2M
h) Draw a graph between the variation of Fermi Dirac distribution function F(E) and 2M
temperature(T).
i) Locate position of fermi energy level in intrinsic semiconductor. 2M
j) Draw the energy band diagrams of conductor, semiconductor and insulator. 2M
PART-B
Answer All five Units 05 x 10 = 50 Marks
UNIT-I
2. a) Define Newton rings. Explain formation of Newton rings with suitable diagram. 7M
b) In a Newton’s rings experiment, the diameter of 5th ring is 0.30 cm and the 3M
diameter of 15th ring is 0.62 cm. Find the diameter of 25th ring.
OR
3. a) Explain Fraunhofer diffraction due to double slit. 8M
b) A grating has 6000 lines/cm, find the angular separation between two wavelengths 2M
of 500 nm and 510 nm in the 3rd order.
UNIT-II
4. a) Define packing factor. Show that FCC is the most closely packed of the three cubic 8M
structures (SC, BCC and FCC).
b) Iron crystallizes in bcc structure. Calculate the lattice constant, given that the 2M
atomic weight and density of iron are 55.85 and 7860 kg/m3 respectively.
OR
5. a) Define Miller Indices. Derive an expression for the inter-planar spacing in case of 7M
a cubic system.
b) Sketch the following planes of a cubic unit cell: (100), (110) and (121). 3M
UNIT-III
6. a) Define: i) Polarization ii) Dielectric constant and iii) Permittivity. 6M
b) Explain Ionic polarization in a dielectric. 4M
OR
7. a) Define orbital magnetic dipole moment. Calculate the orbital magnetic dipole 7M
moment for revolving electron around the nucleus in an atom.
b) A magnetic material has a magnetization of 3300 A/m and flux density of 0.0044 3M
Wb/m2. Calculate magnetizing force and the relative permeability of the material.

8. a) Derive an expression for energy level of a particle in one dimensional potential 7M
well.
b) A quantum particle confined to 1D box of width 2A0. Calculate the energies 3M
corresponding to the second and fourth quantum sates

9. a) Derive the electrical Conductivity based on Quantum force electron theory. 8M
b) Classify solids into conductors, semiconductors and insulator. 2M
UNIT-V
10. a) Discuss drift and diffusion process in a semiconductor with the help of relevant 5M
expressions.
b) Derive Einstein’s relations in semiconductors. 5M

11. a) Distinguish between direct and indirect band gap semiconductors 4M
b) Define Hall effect and derive an expression for mobility in terms of hall coefficient. 6M
