AHU Controls Description 1. 03FinalFB

The document outlines the control sequences for a cooling-only Air Handling Unit (AHU) equipped with variable speed fans and dampers for economizer operation. It details the operation of supply and return fans, damper control for mixed air, and cooling coil modulation to maintain desired temperature setpoints. Additionally, it specifies conditions for fan and valve operation during various modes including lockout and economizer mode.

AHU Controls Description

AHU Type : Cooling Only with Economiser and Supply Air Pressure Control

AHU Equipment : Supply Air Fan with Variable Speed Drive

Return Air Fan with Variable Speed Drive
Outside Air, Return Air, and Exhaust Air Dampers
Cooling Coil with Modulated Chilled Water Valve

Basic AHU Control Sequences :

1. Fans Control

The supply air fan and return air fan shall both run when commanded on by the common AHU
occupancy schedule. The supply air fan and return air fan shall both stop when the fire signal is
active. If the supply air fan or the return air fan fails to provide a valid fan status signal within 10
seconds of initial AHU startup, or at any time after startup, then both fans shall be stopped and the
AHU shall be placed in a lockout mode that requires a manual user reset. The fan(s) that failed to
start shall be identified on the AHU graphic whenever the AHU lockout mode is active.

2. Supply and Return Fans Variable Speed Control

When supply air fan status is initially detected, send a 50% signal (operator adjustable) to the supply
air fan variable frequency drive for 5 minutes (operator adjustable).

After 5 minutes, normal control signal is sent to the supply air fan variable frequency drive. Normal
control signal is the speed of that fan drive that is necessary to achieve an adjustable supply air
pressure setpoint with a throttling range (proportional band) of .3 inches of water column. The
return air fan speed shall be 80% of the supply air fan speed.

3. Dampers Control (Mixed Air Control)

The dampers shall be used to provide an economizer mode whenever the outside air temperature is
2⁰ F or more below the return air temperature. When in economizer mode the dampers shall be
modulated to achieve an adjustable mixed air temperature setpoint with a throttling range
(proportional band) of 10 degrees F. The mixed air temperature setpoint shall be the same as the
supply air temperature setpoint. When the outside air temperature is equal to or greater than the
return air temperature the dampers shall be placed in recirculation mode and shall stay in this mode
until the outside air temperature has fallen to 2⁰ F or more below the return air temperature. When
the AHU is off, the fire signal is active or the AHU lockout mode is active the Outside Air and Exhaust
Air dampers shall be closed, and the Return Air damper shall be opened.

3a. Minimum Fresh Air Control - (Student Exercise)

During economizer mode, Outside and Exhaust Air dampers shall not be allowed to move below a
user adjustable minimum position. (Initial minimum position setting is 25%.)

AHU Controls Description V1.03

Whenever the AHU is in recirculation mode the Outside Air and Exhaust Air dampers shall be set to a
fixed minimum position setting, which uses the same value as the minimum position setting used for
economizer mode. Note: when Outside dampers are set to 25%, Return dampers are set to 75%.

4. Cooling Coil Control - (Student Exercise)

The chilled water valve of the cooling coil shall be modulated to achieve an adjustable supply air
temperature setpoint with a throttling range (proportional band) of 10 degrees F. When the outside
air temperature is greater than the supply air temperature setpoint the chilled water valve shall be
modulated. When the outside air temperature is less than or equal to the supply air temperature
setpoint minus 2 Degr F, the cooling valve shall be closed. When the AHU is off, the fire signal is
active or the AHU lockout mode is active the chilled water valve shall be closed.
