B.E./B.Tech. (First Year): Semester-II (2017-18) Course Code: UCB008
Course Name: Applied Chemistry
Date: 12 Mar., 2018 Day: Monday Time: 2 Hours M. Marks: 60
Names of Faculty: Dr. Amjad All, Dr. Susheel Mittal, Dr. Bonamali Pal, Dr. Satnam Singh, Dr. Ranjana Prakash, Dr.

Kamaldeep Paul, Dr. Vijay Luxami, Dr. Soumen Basu, Dr. Mily Bhattacharya, Dr. Bhupesh Goyal, Dr. Davinder Kumar
Note: Attempt all the questions
Write your group and name of faculty member on the answer sheet
Ql. (a) Give the sequence of events that would take place when a sample solution of the salt is
(5)
introduced into the flame in Flame Emission Spectrophotometer.
(b) During the analysis of a sample for Na, wavelength corresponding at 589 nm was found
(5)
missing. Predict the wavelength that you may observe in the emission spectra of the same
sample. Provide a schematic diagram for flame emission spectrophotometer indicating the
name of each component.
(c) In case of atomic absorption spectrophotometer, give the functions of the following parts: (5)
(i) Hollow cathode lamp (ii) Atomizer (iii) Monochromator

(d) Sodium atom absorbs at a wavelength of 589 nm. What is the energy difference (in J)
between the ground and excited state? At a temperature of 2000 K, what is the ratio of excited (5)
state to ground state population (N*/N o) ? (Given A = g*/go = 2; and k = 1.4 x 10-23 JK-1).
Q.2 (a) What is the difference between a molecular absorption spectrum and an atomic absorption (5)
spectrum and why does this difference exist?
(b) (i) What do you understand by chromophore and auxochrome? Explain with examples.
(5)
(ii) p-Nitrophenol shows red shift in alkaline medium. Explain.
(c) Why conjugation causes bathochromic shift in the absorption maxima of chromophores?
Explain with the help of energy level diagram. (5)
(d) A substance when dissolved in water at 10 -3 M concentration absorbs 10% of an incident
radiation in a path length of 1 cm. What should be the concentration of the solution in order to ( 5)
absorb 90% of the same radiation?
Q.3 (a) 1 H35 CI has a force constant (k) value of 480 N/m. Calculate the fundamental frequency and (5)
its wavenumber (in cm -1). (1 amu = 1.67 x 10-27 Kg)
(b) How does the H-bonding affect the IR absorption band? How will you distinguish between (5)
o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol by IR spectra?
(c) (i) List the total degrees of freedom and vibrational degrees of freedom for the followings:
Ne, D20, CH 4 and Cl2 (5)
(ii) HCI can undergo stretching vibration only whereas CO 2 can undergo stretching as well
as bending vibrations? Explain.
(d) Why are inorganic compounds useful as sample "windows" and matrix material for IR (5)
analysis? Name the light source used in IR spectrometer. How one can distinguish between the
primary and the secondary amines by IR spectroscopy?
