BRANCH : MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
KINEMATICS OF MECHANISMS
Special Instructions : Drawing sheets should be provided
Duration: 3 Hours Maximum: 100 Marks
PART – A
Answer ALL questions.
Each question carries 2 marks. (10 X 2 = 20)
1. Differentiate between Mechanism and Machine.
2. Define Degree of freedom.
3. State law of friction.
4. Differentiate between clutch and brake.
5. List out the various graphical methods used for velocity and acceleration of mechanisms.
6. Draw a sketch to explain how total acceleration of a link is obtained.
7. Define the term dwell.
8. What is the difference between radial follower and offset follower?
9. Define Pressure angle in gear.
10. State Law of gearing.

PART – B
Answer FIVE questions without omitting Qn.No.11.
Question No.11 carries 20 marks and other questions carry 15 marks each.
11. a) What is inversions of mechanism? With neat sketch, explain any two inversions (12)
of single slider crank chain mechanism.

b) Derive the correct steering angle expression for Davis steering gear mechanism. (8)

12. A band brake acts on the 3/4th of circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter (15)
which is keyed to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 225
N-m. One end of the band is attached to a fulcrum pin of the lever and the other
end to a pin 100 mm from the fulcrum. If the operating force is applied at 500
mm from the fulcrum and the coefficient of friction is 0.25, find the operating
force when the drum rotates in the (a) anticlockwise direction, and (b) clockwise
direction.

[OR]
13. A Single plate clutch, with both sides effective, has outer and inner diameters (15)
300mm and 200mm respectively. The maximum intensity of pressure at any
point in the contact surface is not to exceed 0.1N/mm2. If the coefficient of
friction is 0.3. Determine the power transmitted by a clutch at a speed 2500rpm
for two types of assumptions that is for uniform pressure and for uniform wear.
CONTD…,
14. In a four link mechanism, the dimensions of the links are AB=200 mm, (15)
BC=400mm, CD=450mm and AD=600mm. At the instant when DAB=90°, the
link AB has angular velocity of 36rad/s in the clockwise direction. Determine
(i) The velocity of point C (iii) the angular velocities of links BC and CD.
[OR]

15. In the toggle mechanism, as shown in Figure. The slider D is constrained to move (15)
on a horizontal path. The crank OA is rotating in the counter-clockwise direction
at a speed of 180 r.p.m. The dimensions of various links are as follows:
OA = 180 mm; CB = 240 mm; AB = 360 mm and BD = 540 mm. For the given
configuration, find:
1. Velocity of slider D,
2. Angular velocity of links AB, CB and BD;

16. A cam, with a minimum radius of 25 mm, rotating clockwise at a uniform speed (15)

is to be designed to give a roller follower, at the end of a valve rod, motion

described below :
1. To raise the valve through 50 mm during 120° rotation of the cam
2. To keep the valve fully raised through next 30°;
3. To lower the valve during next 60°; and
4. To keep the valve closed during rest of the revolution i.e. 150°
The diameter of the roller is 20 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 25 mm.
Draw the profile of the cam when (a) the line of stroke of the valve rod passes
through the axis of the cam shaft, and (b) the line of the stroke is offset 15 mm from
the axis of the cam shaft. The displacement of the valve, while being raised and
lowered, is to take place with simple harmonic motion.
[OR]
CONTD…,
17. A cam is to be designed for a knife edge follower with the following data : (15)
1. Cam lift = 40 mm during 90° of cam rotation with simple harmonic motion.
2. Dwell for the next 30°.
3. During the next 60° of cam rotation, the follower returns to its original position
with simple harmonic motion.
4. Dwell during the remaining 180°.
Draw the profile of the cam when
(a) the line of stroke of the follower passes through the axis of the cam shaft, and
(b) the line of stroke is offset 20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft.
The radius of the base circle of the cam is 40 mm.

18. Two spur gears of 24 teeth and 36 teeth of 8 mm module and 20° pressure angle (15)
are in mesh. Addendum
of each gear is 7.5 mm. The teeth are of involute form. Determine:
1. the angle through which the pinion turns while any pair of teeth are in contact,
2. the velocity of sliding between the teeth
3. when the contact on the pinion is at a radius of 102 mm. The speed of the
pinion is 450 r.p.m.
[OR]
19. In an epicyclic gear train, the internal wheels A and B and compound wheels C (15)
and D rotate independently about axis O. The wheels E and F rotate on pins fixed
to the arm G. E gears with A and C and F gears with B and D. All the wheels have
the same module and the number of teeth are : TC = 28; TD = 26;TE = TF = 18.
1. Sketch the arrangement ; 2. Find the number of teeth on A and B ; 3. If the
arm G makes 100 r.p.m. clockwise and A is fixed, find the speed of B ; and 4. If
the arm G makes 100 r.p.m. clockwise and wheel A makes 10 r.p.m. counter
clockwise ; find the speed of wheel B.
