Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education-Grade 6 Alternative Delivery


Mode (ADM) Module on Sewing Household Linens!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by educators


both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st-century skills while taking into consideration

What I Need to Know

Hello learners! This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is
here to help you master the nature of TLE-Home Economics. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The lessons will
focus on “Drafts Pattern for household linens” you are going to demonstrate and
understand the skills in sewing household linens, sews household linens using
appropriate tools and materials, and applying basic principles of sewing. You are
going to drafts a pattern for household linens, you may learn the steps in drafting a
pattern as well as the safety precautions in sewing. Sewing is enjoyable and fun,
especially when it is done using the appropriate tools for the job. It can be a
productive hobby and also a profitable livelihood. Sewing is a worthwhile hobby
but it can also be a means of livelihood or a way to augment the family income.

What’s New

In this module, you are going to learn sewing household linens following
appropriate steps and applying basic principles. Sewing materials are important to
make sewing successful and enjoyable. Sewing pillowcases and table runners are a
great project for beginners like you. Orderliness and cleanliness can be developed
by taking care of your sewing materials. Also, you get to practice foundational
sewing skills like squaring up fabric, measuring with a sewing gauge, pinning, and
using basic steps of sewing.

Below are the sample pictures of different shapes, colors, and designs of
pillowcases.

are things to be considered such as:

Activity 4.2: GUESS AND PICK A-STEP


There are six (6) basic steps in sewing pillowcases, in this basket of knowledge.
Look and find it. Arrange it in order. Copy the 5 boxes in your notebook according
to their number, and write the correct step for every box.

Sewing is a worthwhile hobby but it

Steps in drafting a pattern of Table Runner


1. Prepare all the materials needed in drafting in table runner pattern
2. Flat the newspaper or manila paper with a flat iron (if any)
3. Measure the desired width and length of your pattern
4. Cut both ends that it will form a triangle point
5. Line the desired width and length pattern of tailor’s chalk
6. Cut the measured pattern using scissors
7. Fold the fabric into two (2)
8. Flatten the finished drafts of the pattern to the fabric/cloth using pins
9. Trace the pattern into the fabric using a tracing wheel
10. Cut the pattern and start to stitch
11. Finish with a large button or tassels on each end.

Always remember the safety precautions

In handling materials when sewing.

Healthful and Safety Practices in Sewing

Before starting to sew on the machine, it is important to remember these sewing


practices and safety habits:

1. The light should come from the left shoulder. Do not sew when the light is
very bright or very dim.
2. Sit erect on the chair directly in front of the machine.
3. Check if the machine is threaded correctly before you start to stitch.
4. Use your feet when treading.
5. Use scissors for cutting the thread, do not cut the thread using your teeth.
6. Use the pincushion for pins and needles.
7. Keep the sewing room neat and clean before and after sewing.

Safety precautions when working with fabric, thread, and accessories:

1. Keep all needlework during work breaks.


2. Keep all small parts from the set in a box.
3. Do not bite through the thread with your teeth or tear it with your hands;
4. Make sure the length of a thread when sewing must not exceed the length of
the distance to the elbow;
5. When at work with bulk materials put on a face mask.

Safety precautions when working with needles, pins, knitting needles:

1. Keep needles and pins at a certain place (a special box, cushion, etc.)
, do no leave them at the workplace, never take the needle, pins in your
mouth, and do not stick them in the clothes. Do not leave the needle and
pins in the product.
2. Always use a thimble when sewing;
3. Do not use rusty needles and pins;
4. Attach patterns to fabric with sharp ends of pins away from you;
5. Collect and dispose of pieces of broken needles or pins, wrapped in paper;
6. Count the number of pins taken before work and the number of pins at the
end of the work, it must be the same;

7. Keep knitting needles and hook in the case, at the end of the work remove
them out of reach of small children; when working with knitting needles
keep them no closer than 35 centimeters from your eyes.

Safety precautions when working with scissors:

1. Keep the scissors in the case or a box and out of reach of children;
2. Do not leave the scissors blades open;
3. Do not hold scissors with sharp sides up, and do not use them when the
central fastener is weakened;
4. When working, closely observe the direction of cutting. Do not cut in motion;
5. When working, hold the material with your left hand so that the fingers are
away from the blade.

Remember:

For your safety and to avoid an accident, maintain the work area clean and orderly
and the most important, safety rules should be followed and be applied around the
sewing area as well as when you are sewing manually.
