Road works steps

1. Site Survey and Preparation

 Purpose: Collect data for road alignment, drainage, and site-specific

conditions.

 Activities: Mark boundaries, set levels, and establish the centerline.

2. Demolition and Removal of Existing Road

 Purpose: Remove the old pavement to prepare for new layers.

 Activities: Milling, excavation, and removal of unusable materials.

3. Subgrade Preparation

 Purpose: Establish a stable foundation to support the road structure.

 Activities: Grading and removing weak or unstable soil, if needed.

4. Compaction of Subgrade

 Purpose: Strengthen the subgrade to prevent future settlement.

 Activities: Compacting the soil with heavy rollers to reach the

required density.

5. Subbase Layer Installation

 Purpose: Provide a supportive layer above the subgrade.

 Material: Usually consists of crushed stone or gravel.

 Activities: Spread and level the material evenly over the compacted
subgrade.

6. Compaction of Subbase

 Purpose: Ensure the subbase is strong and stable.

 Activities: Compact the subbase layer to meet density requirements.

7. Road Base Layer Installation

 Purpose: Provide the main load-bearing layer above the subbase.

 Material: Usually made of crushed stone or asphalt base material.

 Activities: Spread and level the road base over the subbase.

8. Compaction of Road Base

 Purpose: Stabilize the road base for load distribution.

 Activities: Compact the road base to meet design density.

9. Testing (Density and Thickness)

 Purpose: Ensure layers meet design specifications for strength and

durability.

 Activities: Conduct field density and thickness tests.

10. Binder Course (Intermediate Layer)

 Purpose: Provide additional strength and flexibility between the base

and surface layer.

 Material: Asphalt mix designed to withstand load stresses.

 Activities: Lay the binder course evenly over the road base.

11. Compaction of Binder Course

 Purpose: Achieve stability in the intermediate layer.

 Activities: Compact to required density for durability.

12. Wearing Course (Surface Layer)

 Purpose: Provide a smooth, weather-resistant driving surface.

 Material: High-quality asphalt with a smooth finish.

 Activities: Apply the wearing course as the final driving surface.

13. Compaction and Finishing of Wearing Course

 Purpose: Ensure a durable, smooth surface resistant to wear.

 Activities: Compact to reach a smooth, even finish.

14. Shoulder Construction

 Purpose: Support road edges and improve drainage.

 Material: Usually gravel or asphalt.

 Activities: Construct shoulders along the edges of the road.

15. Edging and Kerbs Installation

 Purpose: Contain the pavement and enhance road aesthetics.

 Activities: Install concrete or asphalt curbs along the edges.

16. Drainage Installation

 Purpose: Direct water away from the road to prevent damage.

 Activities: Install drainage channels, culverts, and storm drains.

17. Pavement Markings and Signage

 Purpose: Guide traffic and enhance road safety.

 Activities: Paint lines, symbols, and install traffic signs.

18. Guardrails Installation

 Purpose: Improve safety on curves or embankments.

 Activities: Install guardrails in critical areas.

19. Street Light Installation

 Purpose: Improve nighttime visibility and safety.

 Activities: Install streetlights along the road where specified.

20. Final Inspections and Testing

 Purpose: Verify that the road meets safety and design standards.

 Activities: Conduct load tests and final quality inspections.

21. Cleaning and Clearance

 Purpose: Prepare the road for use by removing all construction

equipment and debris.

 Activities: Clear construction materials and clean the surface.

22. Opening to Traffic

 Purpose: Officially open the road for public or vehicle use.

 Activities: Ensure all safety measures are in place and remove

barriers.
