Review Module 24-Theory of Structures 3 (2) (1)

The document outlines the superposition method and basic deflection formulas for beams, detailing various scenarios involving fixed and simply supported beams under different loading conditions. It includes calculations for moments, reactions, and deflections at specific points on the beams. Additionally, it introduces the moment distribution method and provides formulas for determining distribution factors.

SITUATION.
A cantilever beam 4 m long deflects by 16 mm at its free end due to a
uniformly distributed load of 25 kN/m throughout its length.

1. If a roller is to be placed at the free end to prevent beam deflection

at the free end, what is the reaction of the roller support?
2. What force P (kN) should be applied at the mid length of the beam
for zero displacement at the free end? Determine the moment reaction of the support at A.
3. If a spring is placed at the free end to limit the deflection to 10 mm, 13. Determine the vertical reaction of the support at B.

SITUATION.
A simply supported beam has a span of 12m. The beam carries a total
uniformly distributed load of 21.5kN/m. To prevent excessive deflection,
a support is added at midspan.

4. Calculate the resulting moment (kN-m) at the added support.

5. Calculate the resulting maximum positive moment (kN-m) when a THREE MOMENT EQUATION
support is added at midspan.
6. Calculate the reaction at the added support.

SITUATION.
Two identical simply supported beams AB and CD are placed so that
they cross each other at their midpoints. Before the uniform load is
applied, the beams just touch each other at the crossing point. Beam
AB carries a uniform load of 6.4kN/m and the length of each beam is
4m. Neglecting the weight of the beams.

7. Determine the interactions force.

8. Determine the maximum bending moment of beam AB.

the center.
