Assignment-II
1) Determine the percentage of total radiant energy emitted from a black tungsten
filament at 1500oC falling within the visible light range (0.38 µm to 0.76 µm). At what
wavelength does the maximum monochromatic emissive power occur for a
temperature of 1500°C?
4) Calculate the radiant flux emitted by a black surface at 2000 K in the cone
𝜋
defined by 0 ≤ 𝜓 ≤ 4 𝑎𝑛𝑑 0 ≤ 𝜙 ≤ 2𝜋 , where ψ is the zenith angle and 𝜙 is the
azimuth angle.
5) The monochromatic emissive power of a diffusely emitting surface at 1000 K is
given by
𝑒𝜆 = 0, 0<𝜆≤1
𝑒𝜆 = 1000, 1<𝜆≤3
𝑒𝜆 = 3500, 3<𝜆≤5
𝑒𝜆 = 2200, 5<𝜆≤7
𝑒𝜆 = 0, 𝜆>7
where eλ, is in W/m2µm and λ is in µm. Calculate (a) the emissive power of the surface,
(b) the em1ss1v1ty of the surface, ( c) the monochromatic emissivity at λ= 4 µm, (d)
the intensity of radiation in the normal direction, and ( e) the monochromatic
intensity in the normal direction at λ= 6.5 µm.
7) Compute the net radiant interchange rate between two adjacent and
perpendicular black rectangular surfaces, both 2 m x 3 m. The surfaces have a
common edge along the 3 m length and are at temperatures of 250°C and 150°C
respectively.
8) Two equal discs of diameter 200 mm each are arranged in two parallel planes 400
m apart. The temperature of the first disc is 500°C and that of the second disc is
300°C. Determine the radiating heat flux between them, if these are (i) black (ii)
gray with emissivities 0.3 and 0.5 respectively.
9) Two parallel plates 0.5 by 1.0 m are spaced 0.5 m apart. One plate is maintained
at 1000°C and the other at 500°C. The emissivities of the plates are 0.2 and 0.5,
respectively. The plates are located in a very large room, the walls of which are
maintained at 27°C. The plates exchange heat with each other and with the room,
but only the plate, surface facing each other are to be considered in the analysis.
Find the net heat transfer to each plate and to the room.
10) Two parallel plates 2 m x 1 m are placed 1 m apart facing each other. Their
temperature and emissivity values respectively are 500°C and 0.8, and 300°C and
0.5. Estimate the net radiant heat transfer between the two plates. If another
identical plate (ε = 0.6) is introduced between the two plates equidistant from each,
find its temperature and the heat gained by the colder plate due to its presence.
11) Calculate the heat transfer rate per unit area by radiation between the surfaces
of two long cylinders having radii 10 cm and 5 cm respectively, the smaller cylinder
being inside the larger cylinder. The axes of the two cylinders are parallel to each
other but separated by a distance of 1 cm. Assume that: (i) the inner cylinder surface
is maintained at 400 K, (ii) the outer cylinder surface is at 300 K and (iii) the
emissivity of both surfaces is 0.5.
12) Consider the rectangular enclosure shown in Fig. Assume that the surfaces are
difuse-gray. The three flat faces ABCD, ABFE and ADHE are at 1000 K and have an
emissivity = 0.6, while the three faces EFGH, DCGH and BCGF are at 1500 K and have
an emissivity = 0.7. Calculate the total rate at which heat is supplied through the
faces EFGH, DCGH and BCGH.
13) Calculate the net rate at which heat is transferred by radiation from the ceiling
of a room which is 6 m long, 3 m wide and 3 m high. The ceiling is at a temperature
of 32° C while the floor is at a temperature of 27° C. Assume that the side walls are
re-radiating and that all the surfaces are black.
14) Calculate the shape factor F1-2 for the configurations given in Fig.
15) The variation of the monochromatic irradiation (in W/m2 µm) falling on a surface
is as follows:
𝜋𝜆
𝐻𝜆 = 400 sin ( ) 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 ≤ 𝜆 ≤ 8 𝜇𝑚
8
𝐻𝜆 = 0 𝑓𝑜𝑟 8 𝜇𝑚 ≤ 𝜆 ≤ ∞
𝜌𝜆 = 0.24 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 ≤ 𝜆 ≤ 3 𝜇𝑚
𝜌𝜆 = 0.10 𝑓𝑜𝑟 3 𝜇𝑚 ≤ 𝜆 ≤ ∞
16) Calculate the heat transfer rate per unit area by radiation between the surfaces
of two long cylinders having radii 10 cm and 5 cm respectively, the smaller cylinder
being inside the larger cylinder. The axes of the two cylinders are parallel to each
other but separated by a distance of 1 cm.
Assume that: (i) the inner cylinder surface is maintained at 400 K,
(ii) the outer cylinder surface is at 300 K and
(iii) the emissivity of both surfaces is 0.5.
20) Find the net heat transfer rate per unit area by radiation by radiation between
a polished stainless steel tube (1.59 cm in dia., 50 cm long, emissivity = 0.25) and the
surrounding surfaces at 300 K if the surface temperature of the tube is (i) 350 K;
(ii) 400 K; and (iii) 450 K.
