EED 19- Technology for Teaching and Learning in the Elementary Grades

Education in early generations was primarily teacher-centered, relying on rote

memorization, strict discipline, and standardized knowledge. Learning was passive, with

students absorbing information from textbooks and lectures in rigid classroom settings.

The curriculum was fixed, emphasizing literacy, numeracy, and historical facts, while

assessments were based mainly on standardized tests and written exams. Technology

played little to no role, and the student-teacher relationship was hierarchical, with

teachers as authoritative figures. In contrast, 21st-century learning is dynamic,

student-centered, and technology-driven. It encourages critical thinking, creativity, and

collaboration through experiential and project-based learning. The curriculum is more

flexible, incorporating STEM, digital literacy, and global awareness while allowing

personalized learning paths. Assessments now include diverse methods like portfolios

and performance-based evaluations. The learning environment has expanded beyond

traditional classrooms to include online and blended learning, fostering adaptability and

problem-solving skills. Teachers act as facilitators and mentors, guiding students in

developing the skills needed for an ever-changing world.
