ambitions on becoming to what profession that they desire. They play a crucial part
on assisting the students to develop their skills on creativity, teamwork, values, etc.
Teachers doesn’t only provide knowledge but discipline to their students as well.
William Glasser once said that effective teaching may be the hardest job there is. All
of us can teach but it doesn’t guarantee that it might be effective. It is the hardest
job as it shows their undying faith on their students on never giving up for them to
grow and shape up to be a better individual. Despite not being the highest paying
career, teachers still deliver the best quality teaching that they could offer. They
hold the highest responsibility on every individual inside their class. As learning is a
continuous cycle, teachers need to make sure that the students have retained
something on their minds that they can still use in the future.
Teachers need to possess qualities as they’re about to face the realities of the
world. Through teaching profession, it provides the skills and perspectives in their
teaching approaches for they are the key players in ensuring high quality education
skills. Teaching has become the most desirable profession. As the population grows,
the demand for education increases according. The more people there are, the
more teachers are needed to educate them. As the population soars to 117.3 million
here in the Philippines according to PSA, the more teaching professions are in
demand.
Within the subject of the teaching profession, it deals with the teacher as a person
and a professional within the context of ensuring to achieve the national teacher
standards and other global teacher standards, professional and ethical values,
awareness of professional rights, privileges and responsibilities as well as their roles
in the society.
1. Different Views of Teaching as a Profession
Here in the Philippines, to become a teacher, generally one must
complete at least four years on the tertiary level to be qualified as one. Some
who have a different course tend to take teaching certificates to be able to
take the licensure exam to teach. The path on becoming an educator
depends on the individual’s timeline depending whether they are ready or
not since teaching requires a maximum time, effort and dedication.
The usual expectations set upon teachers is they must ensure to bring out
the best in their students. It’s never a miracle for students to possessed the
best qualities that teachers are striving for overnight but through faith and
putting high standards on teaching, it could be a stepping stone to have
quality learners in our country.
Cambridge Dictionary defined profession as any type of work that needs
special training or a skill, often one that is respected because it involves high
level of education. Teachers are arguably the most important members of our
society. They can act as a support system that is lacking elsewhere in
students’ lives. They can be a role model and an inspiration to go further and
to dream bigger. They hold students accountable for their successes and
failures and good teachers won’t let their students get away with not living
up to their full potential.
Teachers are expected to be a role model towards their students. Having a
lot of experiences within their hands makes them able to pass their life
lessons towards their students. As a teacher, they are poised to become one
of the most influential people in their student’s life. Some still has their
unforgettable teacher that have served as great influence to their
development.
Teaching is also an organized body of knowledge that separates the group
from all others. To teach all students according to today’s standards,
teachers need to understand subject matter deeply and flexibly so they can
help students create useful cognitive maps, relate one idea to another, and
address misconceptions and false information.
Teaching also serves as a great social purpose in its profession. Teachers
help in building a society where everyone is treated equally, respected, and
valued regardless of differences. The social responsibility of teachers is to
inculcate in their students a spirit of inclusivity. In this way, teachers are
assisting in society’s collective development.
Teaching has become a profession due to its formal period of preparation and
a requirement for continuous growth and development. Before possessing
the qualities on becoming a professional in this career, teachers must finish
their degree as well as complete the prescribed teacher preparation program
or an internship term during their tertiary education. In this program, they
are going to be evaluated to see their competence and to determine if they
have the skills and capabilities on becoming a professional.
Teachers can also play a great role in the economic development of the
country. A crucial factor in a nation's development is education. A society's
future can be created by educating its children. Teachers offer the education
that raises standard of living, benefiting both individuals and society at large
greatly.
Teachers help students become more productive and creative, which will
improve their employability in the future. When students are encouraged to
be innovative and productive, they are more likely to start their own
businesses and invent new technologies, which helps a nation's economy.
The term 'education for the twenty-first century' recognizes that we are living
in a period of rapid change in an increasingly globalized environment, to
which education systems must adapt not just once, but continuously.
Additionally, while foundational skills such as numeracy and literacy remain
important foundations for all future learning, students must also develop 21st
Century skills. This necessitates a fresh emphasis on a wide range of abilities,
including adaptability, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, and
cooperation, to mention a few.
In education, the only constant we can rely on is change. If a person has been
in academia for more than 20 years and has not changed, they may become
irrelevant. New materials and initiatives will always be a part of education,
and to go forward, we must think critically about them and ask probing
questions. Teachers in the twenty-first century must possess the attributes
that an educator in this period seeks.
In this era, teachers should still possess the ideal that they are life long
learners. Learning never ends. As a result, teachers must stay up to date on
the latest information on their subject and pedagogical practices. They should
also communicate what they are learning with their pupils and colleagues in
a professional manner.
