saying with your body language.

What Is It
Good delivery conveys the speaker’s ideas clearly, interestingly, and without
distracting the audience. Most audiences prefer delivery that combines a certain
degree of formality with the best attributes of good conversation- directness,
spontaneity, animation, vocal and facial expressiveness, and a lively sense of
communication (Lucas, 2011). In delivering your speech you need to be capable to
present your message in a clear, coherent and interesting manner.

4
PRINCIPLES OF SPEECH DELIVERY

A. Stage Presence
Delivering a speech is more than just uttering those well thought of words
before the audience. This involves giving out the speech in a manner that it is well
understood by them. In addition, a successful speech is one that keeps the
audience engaged at all times. There are several factors that contribute to get
maximized engagement; one crucial factor being stage presence.
Stage presence is the sum total of all the qualities that keep your audience
engaged while you deliver a speech. Thus, it plays a vital role while delivering a
speech. It is inclusive of everything from the body posture to the tone of your
speech.
Spheres that Constitute Stage Presence
All of the following spheres are equally important for an effective stage
presence that is undoubtedly important to engage the audience while giving a
speech.

1. Appearance and comfort. One must appropriately dress to the occasion.

If it is an official speech like a corporate meet, then you must be formally dressed; on
the contrary if you are making a speech to spread some awareness among other
learners, your dress up can be more relaxed and casual but it must reflect your
confident side at all times. Remember, if you are sure of your appearance you will
automatically exude that amazing self confidence that one necessarily needs while
giving a speech before the crowd.

2. Body posture and attitude. Right from the moment you step on that
stage
your body language matters. The way you stand, your speaking posture, use of hand
gestures etc. everything counts and hence must be well noted and taken care of. A
little nervousness is understood, but you must put yourself at ease to reflect just the
right amount of confidence. Your attitude must be positive, that is, keep in mind that
the audience is intelligent and you must be ready to respond to any interaction on
their part too. Here presence of mind is really important and a little wit won’t harm at
all!

3. Tone. You can play with different styles, as is suitable to the topic of your
speech. Voice modulation, use of examples, a peck of humor, etc. all this is
important in engaging the audience.

4. Stage space. If you are the speaker, it is a smart move to choreograph

your speech, that is, you must plan a speech to be delivered using
different parts of the stage at different levels. You may give up the stage
for a while to get amongst the audience.

5
B. Rapport with Audience
Building rapport is defined as engaging with the audience and connecting with
them.
Rapport is what happens when you have everything in harmony. Your speech is
right. The audience receives it well. They enjoy listening to it as much as you enjoy
delivering it. However, that happy harmonious state doesn't occur without conscious
effort.

2. Find opportunities for humor

3. Allow for flexibility in your content

1. Put your audience first 4. First impressions count

10. Have a strong ending Ways to Build Rapport 5. Have a strong opening

9. Give the audience time

6. Manage the middle
8. Use your voice with variety
