I. GUIDANCE AND EDUCATION

 FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION
 FUNCTION OF GUIDANCE
 DEFINITION OF GUIDANCE
 PURPOSE OF GUIDANCE
 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GUIDANCE
FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION
There are three primary functions of education.

 Developmental function refers the responsibility to develop the unique

qualities of each individual. It is to enhance the individual’s skills in the arts,
sciences, social adjustment, and personal philosophy as well as skills in
vocational choices.

 Differentiating function emphasizes the differences in student’s abilities,

interests, and purposes considering that these characteristics crystallize
into different patterns as the individual matures. There can be no single,
uniform program for all students

 Integrating function is to contribute to the cultural integration of students.

To develop in children a common core of shared beliefs, attitudes, values,
and underlying knowledge.
FUNCTION OF GUIDANCE

Basic contributions of guidance to education are:

 Encourage individual differences and respect for the individual.

 Careful study of each student.
 Establishment and maintenance of helping relationships.
 Coordination and management of school and community resources.
DEFINITION OF GUIDANCE

 Its meaning seems to derive from its root word, guide, which means

to direct, pilot, or manage.

 As a concept, guidance denotes a point of view about helping an

individual.

 As an educational construct, it refers to the provision of experiences

that help students to understand themselves.

 As a program, it refers to procedures and processes organized to

achieve educational and personal goals.

Guidance is the process of helping individuals to understand themselves

and their world (Shertzer & Stone, 1981, p. 40).

DEFINITION OF GUIDANCE

Components of the definition are;

 Process: continuous change over time

 Helping: aiding, assisting

 Individuals: students in the school setting

 To understand themselves and their world: individuals come

to know who they are as individuals, become aware of their

personal identity, experience their world, and deeply

understand the people with whom they interact.

PURPOSE OF GUIDANCE
By understanding self and world, individuals:

 become more effective

 become more productive

 become more happier human beings

 manage their lives better

 become more purposeful about what they want to do

 achieve greater awareness not only of who they are but of who they can become

 enhance personal development

 become passionate (loving) with themselves (accept, enjoy, understand, disclose the
self)

 become productive in relating to their external world (efficient, fully functioning,

vocationally adjusted, intelligent, creative, socially attractive, truly effective) become
compassionate toward others (altruistic, loving, caring, sensitive, genuinely helpful,
effective facilitators of growth)
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GUIDANCE

 Guidance is concerned primarily and systematically with the

personal development of individual (acquiring knowledge of the
self and understanding personal experiences and creating
meaning of life).

 Guidance is oriented toward cooperation, not compulsion

(guidance takes place by the mutual consent of the individuals
involved; depends willingness to change rather than on threat).

 Humans have the capacity for self-development.

 Guidance is based upon recognizing the dignity and worth of

individuals as well as their right to choose.

 Guidance is a continuous, sequential, educational process.
