WEEK 9 F- LAB ACTIVITY: Network Common Issues, No Power and No

Response/Feedback

SCENARIO: OFFICE NETWORK OUTAGE A mid-sized accounting firm experiences a

sudden network outage affecting all wired connections. Employees cannot access
shared files, printers, or the internet.

What is the root cause:

A malfunctioning network switch was the cause of the outage, which prevented wired
connectivity. The absence of blinking activity lights indicated that the switch was not
transmitting data.

Resolution & Prevention:

1. Restore network connectivity by swapping out the malfunctioning switch for a
functional spare.
2. To spot failure early on, undertake routine maintenance and inspections on network
hardware (e.g., overheating, physical damage, irregular performance).
3. Use a backup switch or network redundancy to minimize downtime in the case of a
switch failure.
Initial Symptom of the Issue:
Wi-Fi users were unaffected, however employees who had wired connections were
unable to access shared files, printers, or the internet.
Possible Causes:
1. Switch failure – Indicated by no blinking lights.
2. Power supply issue – The switch may not be receiving power.
3. Network cable disconnection – A faulty or unplugged uplink cable could disrupt
connectivity.
4. Configuration issue – The switch may have been misconfigured or reset.
Reference to the Manufacturer's Manual:

See the troubleshooting instructions provided by the switch maker, which usually
outlines how to diagnose power problems, examine LED indicators, and test
connectivity.

Methodical Solution:

Step 1: Verify the connectivity of the device. To verify network reachability, ping the
default gateway (e.g., ping 192.168.1.1).
Check to see if Wi-Fi users stay connected while all wired users are impacted.

Step 2: Examine the hardware of the switch. Examine the switch's LED lights to see if it
is powered on. Verify that the PoE source or power adapter is operating correctly.

Step 3: Examine and swap out the switch To check if the switch restarts, disconnect
and reattach the power cable. Use a spare switch that is known to function in its place.

Step 4: Confirm the restoration of the network. Pinging nearby devices and gaining
access to network resources will test wired connectivity. Verify that every device has
access to internal services and the internet.

Step 5: Put preventative measures into action Maintain a supply of spare networking
equipment on hand and plan routine hardware inspections. For future use, note the
problem and revise the network troubleshooting manual.
