4. Forms of chromosomes: 8. Essen1al Vocabulary:

DescripCon Sketch Structure What is it…

Centrioles Triplets of microtubules that help

ChromaCn- loosely wound (animal cells make more microtubules and move
strands of DNA only!) parts of the cell during division.
mitoCc spindle An apparatus of different types of
Sister chromaCds- idenCcal microtubules including spindle fibers,
pair of chromosomes asters, and centrioles (answers may
not be as specific as that!)
ChromaCd- single centromere The part where sister chromaCds
chromosome a\ach to each other.

5. Are those sisters idenCcal twins?

Sister chromaCds are…. iden1cal because they are a replicated pair; the DNA replicated to make 2
Copies of itself- one for each of the new new nuclei/ daughter cells that will form.

Stage DescripCon

10. PROPHASE Nuclear envelope breaks down, the chroma1n condenses and shortens
into visible chromosomes; mito1c spindle begins to form; nucleolus
disappears.

11. METAPHASE The mito1c spindle expands and the chromosomes move to the equator
of the cell.

12. ANAPHASE The sister chroma1ds are separated by the spindle fibers and pulled to
opposite poles of the cell.

13. TELOPHASE The mito1c spindle dissolves; the chroma1ds unravel back into
chroma1n; the nuclear envelope and nucleolus reform.

18. Name that phase!
16. How does mitosis differ in plant cells
than animal cells?
Plants do not have centrioles, animals do.
Plants have a “pre-prophase band” that is A
a precursor to the cell plate/cell wall,
which animal cells do not have. Animal
cells use a cleavage furrow when dividing.
B
C
17. Do red blood cells undergo
mitosis? Why or why not?
Red blood cells do not undergo mitosis
because mitosis is the division of the A. Prophase
nucleus, and red blood cells lack nuclei.. B. Telophase
C. Anaphase

19. Your Chosen Mitosis Statement: Mitosis is part of the cell cycle
Why you chose it (why you think it’s correct) : Mitosis is one part of the cell cycle that divides the
nucleus. Before mitosis during interphase, the cell replicates DNA and organelles, during interphase
the nucleus is divided, and finally during cytokinesis the cell divides into two daughter cells.

20. Cytokinesis….
What is it? The division of the cytoplasm which leads to two daughter cells- the final step of cell
division.
Why is cytokinesis not part of mitosis? Mitosis is only one part of the cell cycle in which the
nucleus is divided- cytokinesis only describes the division of the cytoplasm.

21. Cytokinesis Plant vs. Animal Cells

How is cytokinesis different s in Plant Cells vs. Animal Cells? In plant cells, a cell plate is
used where a cell wall is developed between the two nuclei to separate the cytoplasm. In animal
cells, a cleavage furrow is used to pinch the cytoplasm apart into two new cells.
