Axioms of Addition and Multiplication

Axiom of Addition (Commutative, Associative, Identity, and Inverse):

1. Commutative Property of Addition:

The order of adding two numbers does not affect the sum.
Example: If a+b=c then b+a=c.

Exercise 1:
Solve for the sum and verify the commutative property:
5+8=______ and 8+5=______.

2. Associative Property of Addition:

The grouping of numbers in addition does not affect the sum.
Example: (a+b)+c= a + (b + c).

Exercise 2:
Group and add:
(3+4)+7= ______ and 3+(4+7)= ______.

3. Identity Property of Addition:

Adding zero to any number does not change the value of that number.
Example: a+0=a.

Exercise 3:
Solve:
12+0= ______ and 0+18= ______.

4. Inverse Property of Addition:

For every number, there exists an additive inverse such that their sum is zero.
Example: a+(−a)=0.

Exercise 4:
Find the additive inverse of 777 and check:
7+(−7)= ______.

Axiom of Multiplication (Commutative, Associative, Identity, and Distributive):

1. Commutative Property of Multiplication:

The order of multiplying two numbers does not affect the product.
Example: If a×b= c, then b×a= c.

Exercise 5:
Multiply and verify the commutative property:
6×4=______ and 4×6=______.
2. Associative Property of Multiplication:
The grouping of numbers in multiplication does not affect the product.
Example: (a×b)×c=a×(b×c).

Exercise 6:
Group and multiply:
(2×3)×5= ______ and 2×(3×5)= ______.

3. Identity Property of Multiplcation:

Multiplying any number by one does not change its value.
Example: a×1= a.

Exercise 7:
Solve:
14×1=______ and 1×28= ______.

4. Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition:

Multiplying a number by a sum is the same as multiplying the number by each addend
and then adding the products.
Example: a×(b+c)= a×b+a×c.

Exercise 8:
Apply the distributive property:
5×(3+7)= ______ and 5×3+5×7=______.

Axioms of Equality

1. Reflexive Property of Equality:

Any number is equal to itself.
Example: a=a.

Exercise 9:
Prove that 12=12.

2. Symmetric Property of Equality:

If one number is equal to another, then the second number is equal to the first.
Example: If a= b, then b =a.

Exercise 10:
If x=5, what is the value of 5= x?

3. Transitive Property of Equality:

If one number is equal to a second, and the second is equal to a third, then the first is
equal to the third.
Example: If a=b and b=c, then a=c.
Exercise 11:
If p=3 and 3q, then what is the value of p=q?

4. Substitution Property of Equality:

If two numbers are equal, one can be substituted for the other in any expression.
Example: If a=b, then a can replace b in any equation.

Exercise 12:
If y=7, solve the equation 3+y= ______ using substitution.

Bonus Challenge Question

Exercise 13:
Use the distributive property and properties of addition and multiplication to simplify:
(2x+3)(4)
