Homework Assignment# 01

Deadline: 07 May, 2023

Problem 1:
The voltage and current for a device are periodic functions with time period of 100 ms, given as,
10 𝑉 0 < 𝑡 < 70 𝑚𝑠
v (𝑡) = {
0 70 𝑚𝑠 < 𝑡 < 100 𝑚𝑠
0 0 < 𝑡 < 50 𝑚𝑠
𝑖(𝑡) = {
4𝐴 50 𝑚𝑠 < 𝑡 < 100 𝑚𝑠
Find the following,
a) Instantaneous power.
b) Average power.
c) Energy absorbed by device in each period.
d) Sketch v(t), i(t), p(t) in PLECS, and compare the result of average power in b) and simulation.

Problem 2:
A voltage of v (𝑡) = 100 𝐶𝑜𝑠 (2𝜋60𝑡) is applied to a non-linear load. The resulting current is
expressed in Fourier series as,
𝑖(𝑡) = 15 𝐶𝑜𝑠 (2𝜋60𝑡 + 35°) + 6 𝐶𝑜𝑠 (4𝜋60𝑡 + 15°) + 𝐶𝑜𝑠 (8𝜋60𝑡 − 10°)
Find,
a) RMS voltage and current.
b) Power absorbed by load.
c) Power factor of load.
d) THD in load current.
e) Compare the results of a) and b) with simulated results in PLECS

Problem 3:
For a half wave rectifier with resistive load of 20Ω and input voltage of 𝑉(𝑡) = 200 𝑆𝑖𝑛 (400𝑡).
Find,
a) Average and RMS load current.
b) Apparent power supplied by the source.
c) Power factor.
d) Simulate the circuit in PLECS, sketch and show the average and RMS load current

Problem 4:
A half wave rectifier with RL load and a source of 170 V (peak). The frequency is 60 Hz. The
parameteres of the load are R = 10 Ω and L = 10 mH. Find,
a) Expression of the load current.
b) Average current.
c) Power absorbed by resistor.
d) Power factor.
e) Simulate the circuit in PLECS, sketch and show the average load current
Assume 𝛽 to be 3.5.
