EE 4520: ELECTRICAL MACHINES AND POWER

ELECTRONIC DRIVES
Assignment– 1
DUE: Thursday, Feb 17, 2025

1. A sinusoidal voltage source V(t) = 300 Cos(377t) is applied to a nonlinear load, resulting
in anon-sinusoidal current which is expressed in Fourier series form as:

I(t) = 6 + 10cos(377t + 30o ) + 5cos(754t + 45o ) + 2cos()1131t + 60o

Determine

(a) RMS value of the voltage and current.

(b) The power absorbed by the load.
(c) The power factor (PF) of the load current.
(d) The distortion factor (DF) of the load current.
(e) The form factor (FF) of the load current.
(f) the ripple factor (RF) of the load current.
(g) The total harmonic distortion factor (THD) of the load current.

2. A single phase half-wave rectifier is supplying a resistive load of 30Ω as shown in Fig.1
and supplied by a AC source of 110 V rms and 60 Hz.

Figure 1: A single phase half-wave rectifier

(a) Calculate the average values of the output voltage and output current.
(b) Calculate the rms values of the output voltage and output current.
(c) Calculate the average power delivered to the load.
(d) Repeat part (c) by assuming that the source has a resistance of 40Ω.

3. A single phase full-wave rectifier is supplying a resistive load of 50Ω as shown in Fig.2
and supplied by a AC source voltage of vs = 175sin(2π60t).
(a) Calculate the average values of the output voltage and output current.
(b) Calculate the rms values of the output voltage and output current.
(c) Calculate the average and rms values of the diode current (for any one diode in the
circuit).
4. A single phase half-wave rectifier is supplying a RL load with R = 10Ω & L = 40 mH
as shown in Fig.3 and supplied by a AC source voltage of vs = 175sin(377t).

Figure 3: A single phase half-wave rectifier with RL load

(a) Calculate the time at which diode stops conducting. (Hint: Solution of a nonlinear
equation is required)
(b) Calculate the average values of the output voltage and output current.
5. A single phase half-wave rectifier is supplying a resistive load with R = 10kΩ with a
capacitive filter C = 40µF as shown in Fig.4 and supplied by a AC source voltage of
vs = 140sin(377t).

Figure 4: A single phase half-wave rectifier with R load and C filter

(a) Calculate the average output voltage.

(b) Calculate the output voltage ripple.
